Ships Ahoy - Aliens: Colonial Marines

SEGA announces that Aliens: Colonial Marines is now available worldwide, offering a new first-person shooter set in the Aliens sci-fi setting for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, with a WiiU edition coming at some future date. Here's the official launch trailer for the game, and here's word:
SEGA® of America, Inc., SEGA® Europe Ltd., Gearbox Software and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products® today announced that its highly buzzed-about blockbuster Aliens™: Colonial Marines video game is now available on store shelves across the globe for PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows® PC. A release date for the announced Wii U™ version will be revealed at a later time.

Pitting players against the universe’s deadliest killing machine, the Xenomorph, Aliens: Colonial Marines is the official video game continuation to one of Sci-Fi’s most renowned movie franchises. As the authentic addition to the ALIENS canon, the game’s stunning visuals and adrenaline pumping action will deliver a breathtakingly immersive four-player drop-in drop-out cooperative campaign and four expansive competitive multiplayer modes – Escape, Team Deathmath, Survivor and Extermination.
The critical reception for the game so far has been pretty negative, and Eurogamer notes a this tweet and this one from sleuth superannuation pointing to this post from last year that he disregarded at the time. This includes a comment from someone claiming to be an ex-developer on the project saying at the time development had "been a total train wreck," and that Gearbox was only developing the multiplayer portion of a game primarily designed by TimeGate Studios.

Personally, I think Gearbox is being really smart about buying up struggling games from incompetant developers. They get first crack at developing a brand new Duke Nukem franchise that comes with a ton of name recognition, and the chance to make a proper Aliens game. Nothing like buying up quality franchises on the cheap. Makes business sense.

So, I haven't played the campaign yet (waiting for friends so we can play it together tonight) but I have spent a lot of time in Multiplayer. I actually REALLY enjoy the multiplayer. My only complaints with it is that there are only two maps per mode and that Xeno wall climbing is a bit clunky (should have been automatic like AVP 1 and 2) and also there are only 4 female heads vs 10 for guys and not one female head has a helmet option, which you get unlocks to customize. Also it seems Horde mode is missing and needs DLC.

Honestly if Gearbox cares I think they can turn this game around. Give Horde mode out for free and release a map editor for the PC (afterall it's Unreal engine all they really have to do is turn on custom maps).

We'll see what they do and I will agree that it doesn't seem like there's a lot of longevity here but so far I'm having fun with it. I will say though that I was gifted my copy and had I spent $60 judging by the MP alone I probably would be disappointed but then I rarely buy games unless they are HUGELY replayable, for example: Skyrim, KSP, Guild Wars 2, etc.

Sadly a parody account. Still made me chuckle.

And from a link in one of those comments here's a video showing a guy completing a level without firing a shot.

Jeez, it's a massacree.

Even though things didn't look good in the trailer, I was hopeful at least the gameplay and story would be okay.

Well, yeah. They have in every Aliens game. Silent guys you can't see and can kill you in 1 hit make for terrible experiences.

Watching that original AvP video (which has facehuggers that scream) is interesting. I played the crap out of it, but I'm not sure it would hold up. But the atmosphere sure does (it looks so desolate, something born less from design and more from necessity, but something few companies do anymore), and man, around 2:28 the flare is dying while an alien is still out there...
That video makes it seem like flares are too plentiful, though, or maybe too easy to throw out. I guess it sounds like a Doom duct-taped flashlight thing, but I would have found it worse if you had to pause from shooting, even just for a full second beat, to throw a flare.

The guy moves way too fast, and aliens seem to just drop from nowhere, look around, then go for you, but that's all from the date. A true, updated one could have made better ceiling-lunging aliens, kept the lighting system that added the terror, kept the motion sensor constantly keeping you nervous, etc.

Also: the Predator sucked in that game. Sucked to fight, sucked to play.

LOL the game sucks horrible, but the multiplayer is a hell of alot of fun.
It's kinda like Gremlins 2. Don't take it seriously, don't think of the first movie, and alot more fun when alcohol is involved.

The game is cool for a minute and then it gets stupid really quick.

*Spoilers ahead*

The game is glitchy. The videos are true. I've also had rendered cut scenes just skip 5 seconds ahead so you don't know what happened. In your first encounter with an alien it literally spawns right in front of your face. It's not that it's blended into the wall, it just spawns on the wall 6 inches from your face. There isn't even any room for it to be between you and the wall.

Cliche and predictable over and over and over and over. When that cut scene happened chest burster was bursting. Gee I picked up a marine in egg central and didn't expect that. Guess what, the next marine you go looking for just woke up with a hugger on her mouth and it died. Now we are running around together. Why?

Facehuggers now with vocal chords. Seriously, they make sounds like they have a mouth.

Mercenaries. They are supposedly bad ass, but nothing says bad ass like a bright white uniform with a fresh baseball cap. IDK about you, but all the mercs I've ever seen wear black or camo. Also, they are actually bad ass.

Seriously, skip it. It's more Aliens 4 + Aliens vs Predator movies.

40 minutes of this mess in co-op right here.

I especially like the guy doing chest compressions in mid-air above the shoulder of the marine he's supposedly trying to save.

You have to go back to the 1999 "A vs P" for a game that got the atmosphere and horror correctly:

Every 10 steps was a strategic decision and the aliens literally waited in the dark and then lunged. Only problem is that there was no save option in the game.

Just saw another one where a large alien chases the marines, they run into a room and the door closes behind them, he comes in, door closes behind him, looks around, decides not to kill them, exits the room, door closes again, then thinks again and turns back around, comes in, and kills them.

SUMMARY: Like most successful license-based games, Aliens: Colonial Marines is much more than a loving homage; it serves as one of the most robust story-driven co-op experiences to date. The concept definitely has room to grow, but as maiden voyages go, Colonial Marines is a clear winner.

THE GOOD: A modern Alien game that does much more than avoid being total crap.
THE BAD: AI teammates that seem to forget the alien menace must be obliterated
THE UGLY: The cutscenes. Love-ya-mean-it, guys, but next time, can ya get Halo 4’s CG squad?
SCORE: 9.0

so what are you waiting for? go out and buy it!

Yeah that one is hilarious, not really for the score itself though. I'm all for differences of opinion but many of the things he cites about specific parts of the game are literally opposite of what gamers and reviewers are saying. It's also really vague and light on info that indicates he actually played the game. He's getting called out in the comments at least. It's also hard to get over the massive Xenomorph advertisement superimposed behind it.
