Ubisoft Results: AC3 Sells > 12 Million Units; New AC Coming

Ubisoft's Q3 2012/13 sales figures are now public, showing sales for the fiscal quarter ending December 31st were 23% higher than the same period the previous year, and saying this is above the upper range predicted for the period. Also, GameSpot covers the company's post-results conference call, where they revealed plans for another installment in the Assassin's Creed series, saying this will (naturally) be set during a different era, and is expected for release in their fiscal 2014, which runs from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014. Back to their earnings, among other things, Ubisoft attributes the results to strong performance in the core segment:
An outstanding performance by the core gamer segment, driven by very high-quality games. Assassin's Creed® 3 was a record-breaking success with more than 12 million sell-in and digitally distributed units, representing an almost 70% increase over Assassin's Creed® Revelations. Far Cry® 3 was the highest-rated shooter game in 2012 for Xbox360 (with a Metacritic score of 90%), and delivered a much higher-than-expected performance, with already over 4.5 million sell-in and digitally distributed units.

And once I got the hidden blade, knife, and tomahawk, I rarely used any other weapons in the game.

Then you missed out. The two-handed axes were hilariously effective and particularly vicious.

I'm a huge fan of AC but I did find 3 disappointing - performance bugs (i'm SLI'd with two 670's) and graphical glitches too didn't help (snow was broken for SLI). I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY that there wasn't enough assassination and that the game world felt a bit 'empty' in terms of interesting stuff to do. The naval missions stuff was great fun though

Also, connor - what a block of wood. He was so damn BORING wasn't he? Glad he's 'retired'. I wasn't a big fan of the setting either (i'm a brit but it wasn't the brits being bad that put me off it's just that area of history lacks much interest for me - probably diff. if you're a yank I guess). It lacked the mystique of the eras of the previous games. Perhaps it would of helped if they'd hung on to Jesper Kyd for the music too - I always found his compositions added so much to the atmosphere of the game and, although the new guy wasn't terrible by any means he didn't compare for me.

So more assassinations next time, a more interesting setting and hey, lets have some of those cool side dungeons to explore again please - the tomb raider-esque puzzly bits were a lovely break from the fights.

Yeah Connor was too stoic in AC3. And there wasn't nearly enough neck-stabbing. And once I got the hidden blade, knife, and tomahawk, I rarely used any other weapons in the game.

I loved AC3 for the setting; the whole colonial thing was just a total breath of fresh air. I had fun for hours just wandering around The Frontier pouncing on elk and bobcats. The story was well presented and well paced. That being said, it did run pretty terribly on PS3. I understand the argument that AC3 should have had more assassinations, but I'm glad they took the game in a new direction. The story as presented didn't leave a lot of room for Conner to run around "assassinating" people willy nilly. There were very clear, well-defined antagonists.

i didnt think it was any worse than the other AC games, which were all around average IMO... although it was quite different anyways, and it seemed less about "assassins" than any of the others

i would like to see the next one set in the far east.. or maybe ancient egypt or sumeria

Despite its medicority, I'm not surprised at the sales numbers all. It was marketed out the wazoo in every possible media outlet for months. In fact, I've never seen so many commercials or web ads for a game before; not even a CoD game.

Tim, you said exactly word for word how i felt about AC3. AC3 is the first AC game that has not gripped me so i have not finished it.

totally feel the same way about Jesper Kyd too. his music added so many layers to the previous games.

thanks!

Yes big fan of Jesper (since the Amiga days) and I think people often underestimate the importance of music in gaming and how it can evoke that extra layer of atmosphere.

I did finish it btw - and i'm still glad that I did. Despite all I said it was enough of an AC game to keep me going - it's just that at times (for the reasons listed) I wanted it to be 'more'.

12 million sales is gargantuan.

I'm a little surprised. I knew it was popular, but 12 million? That's damn impressive.

I enjoyed it but there were many frustrating moments. The problem with these games is that so many different teams work on different parts, they will break something, fix it in the next game then another team will break a different part. There's always something annoying going on that detracts from the fun. The tree/rooftop camera aiming was all over the place in this, something that they had finally nailed down in Revelations. Just stuff like that.

I can't say I really care about the conflict, story or characters anymore. I bought it to finish off the trilogy but I don't see myself getting another game, 6+ games on the various platforms was plenty.

So far each one sells more than its predecessor, so it's a safe bet they'll keep going for awhile. 12 million sales is gargantuan.

I just hope they redesign the series. While I was glad that AC3 was a break from the Ezio style games, it was just way way WAY too fucking cluttered with needless and un-enjoyable shit. The cool side-assassination missions had become a boring mini-game, there was waaaaay too much handholding with all these people on your homestead (making me feel like a Mayor, rather than a fucking assassin), and quite a few of the missions, especially later in the game, really just weren't any fun.

I gave AC3 a try because it looked great, and I had fun for a good 30 hours or so, but I don't know that I'm picking up another one, unless it's set in a modern or even future setting.
