The price of 3DS games is what prevented me from getting one for my girlfriends daughter for Christmas, they really do need to revisit it.

The problem is not piracy, sigh, it's the price of the game relatively to quality and demand of that kind of game.

I think they will have to stop developing for the 3Ds and go to another platform instead because their game is not worth paying 40$. Part of the price is probably to cover royalty to Nintendo but they have to realize that their game is a 5-10$ game. People only pay full price to AAA games that will sell for sure, otherwise, price need to go down.

It's all real simple. People do not spend thousands of hours and their and their family's well being just so you can play video games in your free time. They do it so they have income and can pay their bills. There's no real excuse for piracy. There seems to be an air of "entitlement" in the gaming community. "Well, the game wasn't that good, so I'm entitled to it for free." No, no you're not. You aren't entitled to anything. If video games are too expensive for you, find a new hobby.

You're kind of preaching to the choir here. Few here support the model of "pirate now, buy later if I like it (or never)." But unfortunately, piracy is a fact of life. EVERY DRM system has been bypassed. Every. Single. One. The way to combat it is through education and making your game accessible.

Steam has probably been the single greatest reducer of PC game piracy by making the games cheap, convenient, and easy to access. Why bother with Bittorrent when I can have Steam's massive, clean bandwidth available to me for $5 or $10 per game (more if I buy at launch) and have all my friends and family available for multiplayer at a button click?

Sure, and that's what this dev is saying is happening. When people squabble about the ceaseless barrage of unimaginitive, repetive games like military shooters that sell billions but are simply the same as the last game with new perks, remember that the creative, small guys decided to switch careers rather than make no profit due to children believing they are due free games.

That sounds like a good argument, until you think about it. The points you are tying together have nothing in common. Having a creative game doesn't make you any more or less susceptible to piracy than unimaginative ones. If a game is making "billions", then it's because people are buying it. If people are buying it, that proves there are people willing to pay for games. If your games aren't selling, and we've already proven there are people willing to pay for games, it's not because of piracy, it's because people don't want your game.

If anything, the recent explosion in indie games proves that the "creative, small guys" are doing just fine as long as they are making games people want to play. Apparently this guy wasn't.

It's really simple, piracy is a fact of life in the software industry and you either factor it into the cost of doing business or you find another line of work.

Well the sad fact is there aren't enough adult-focused games on any Nintendo since GCN to justify purchasing the consoles themselves. It's no loss to me giving the (extremely rare) odd Nintendo game that actually looks fun a go via an emulator.

The dev is saying that if 3DS piracy is as bad as it supposedly was on DS that he'll quit making 3DS games.

I personally played the only ~5 or so really good DS games via no$gba and desmume. It's immensely fucking sad the only real Castlevania games are on handhelds, and the only decent jRPGS, too.

Is 3DS piracy that bad? I would have thought it to be fairly difficult since the 3DS is a closed system, and the software is on cartridges. I was under the impression that console (xbox, PS, nintendo, etc.) was fairly low vs. the PC. Is this not the case?

There was a rumor or something that showed up on reddit about the 3DS being hackable through a certain game.

I think his comment is assuming that the rumor is true and he's being asked "What are your feelings on piracy and the 3ds?"

I've never heard of this guy's game. Good excuse for why his sequel must have sucked. Seems like there were plenty of DS game sales, I've seen DS games everywhere in retail. They don't give it space if it doesn't sell.

You can't pirate 3DS games at all right now, Nintendo took it seriously this time. You can play DS games on a 3DS though. I assume the dev was posing it as a theoretical.

his point is moot -- the days of specialized proprietary portable gaming devices like the 3ds are numbered.

Personally I think the freemium crapware on android and iOS are horrible but global consumers in the millions seem to like that stuff

I think there's room for portable handhelds but probably only one going forward, the market seems to bear this out as the 3DS is doing fairly well but the Vita is failing. It might not be the growth market it used to be of course.

That dev comment is just plain sad. If you're selling enough copies of your game to make it worth all the trouble of making it why does piracy suddenly make it not worth it?

I guess in his mind if piracy goes up then that means sales have to go down but I can't remember the last time I looked at a game I wanted to buy and said, "Well let's go see if I can pirate it first..." Assuming the game is priced correctly I'll just pay for it and be on my way.

Pay attention to your sales. That should be what you make decisions based on.

This reminds me vaguely of the Quantic Dream tiff over used copies of Heavy Rain which was essentially, "we made a nice profit but it would have been more if not for resellers" which they likened to pirates.

This guy also seems to make a lot of definitive statements with nothing but his personal opinion to back them up. A sign he doesn't exactly think very logically.
