That is great that soldier is standing there, but he looks unarmed. Looks like another victim to me, standing in front of a soft target.

I am not for banning anything. Again it is all about control. But ban away, it will get out of control and do nothing.

What happens when this is done with a shotgun and a revolver? Does that eliminate the argument they currently have? The whole thing is just silly.

There are crazies out there and states have taken away mental institutions as they were dens of abuse and experiments. So now crazies are everywhere and an adult cannot be forced to take medication. They harm people, and there is nothing anyone can do about it....

26 people died, and it sucks, it really does. Although tragic and a shock to your system, consider the following.
How many smoking related deaths were on that day?
How many traffic fatalities?
How many abortions?
How many malnourished children died?
How many homeless died?

How many kids, fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, and pets in foreign countries died from American drone strikes, bombs, infantry, tanks, missiles, depleted uranium ammo, and so on? Why is this always overlooked even though it's the biggest killer of all?

How many people die in fires everyday? Every minute there is a house fire.
How many rapes on that day by those previously incarcerated for a sex crime?

There are a lot of shitty things that hapen. This is sensational in a rich area (check city data, this isn't the ghetto) and a true tragic event. What is going to be done? The most sensational knee jerk reaction possible so everyone can pat themselves on the back like they made a difference. Then they will go back to doing whatever bullshit they do on a normal basis until it happens again or something more sensational happens.

Just disgusted with some of the conversations people are having, what is on tv, the trash and insults people throw around, the finger pointing.....our society has allowed this to happen over the past 20-30 years. Not just in the case, but violent offenders are reoffending, and the system doens't seem to care.

There, I fixed it for you. Was a good list, but now it's more accurate.

Why doesn't anyone blame the government/military for glamorizing war and mass-murder? You can't turn on the television without seeing it. Why doesn't anyone ever question it? The majority of our tax dollars go to military and black budgets. Our entire society is now centered around wars. Why do these organization like the NRA and the video game industry always point at each other instead of the 8 trillion pound gorilla in the room?

The kids are not stupid and can see what's going on.

I'm all with the NRA on this one. A shootout with the mad killer and a dozen triggerhappy civilians at the elementary school (!) would have definitely been better than this.

Yeah, I'm being sarcastic. FUCK the mad killer, and FUCK all those who intend to do the same. And to the NRA - it's all about money for you, not about protection. And now you're even trying to make MORE SALES because of this a$$hole who killed young kids. Somebody should... Aw, forget it.

What the US needs is more COPS, not more civilians with guns! And higher taxes to pay those additional police officers should be welcome.

EDIT: Yeah, alright, I'm a bit emotional, but what happened here is horrible, and then there's the hunt for some scapegoat (the movies, the games, the media), but as always, very few look for the REAL reasons (parents, friends, mobbying at school and elsewhere). It's like the kids getting killed again. Disgusting.

The right to bear arms is necessary to protect ourselves from jackbooted government thugs. Government, please hire hundreds of thousands of new armed employees to protect our kids.

WAT

The NRA needs to die from a serious stabbing. They're nothing but schills for gun and ammo manufacturers and they do nothing but sour our politics with their crazy rhetoric.
I wonder if he reads them, or if it's just for show.

They are redirecting or deflecting the attention away from them towards the usual escape-goats. They really need to own up to some of the problems concerning the how easy it is to get fire arms without background checks in certain places or owners not properly securing the weapons.

It doesn't matter that studies haven't found any link that watching movies, listening to music, reading certain books, or playing games makes you violent. They are more than happy to keep perpetuating the myths for easy sound bites.

The attention really needs to be on changing the laws for certain classes of military like weapons and spending more money on researching mental illness.

It's too easy for Americans to get guns. Not that I think making it harder would have prevented this.

Ultimately firearms make murders easy for people who aren't physically imposing or don't have the guts to really get their hands dirty. It's a device with a switch that makes killing possible with little effort.

I don't think firearms are directly the issue. There honestly isn't much direct action one can take to prevent this. Beyond perhaps individual responsibility and noticing when someone has mental health issues. Even that is hard since if you're thinking of killing off a room of school children you're likely withdrawn and not interacting socially enough to be noticed. There really isn't an easy answer to this.

A grand idea indeed. I'm sure every morning the soldier will wake up, look in the mirror and say to himself "This is what I've trained for my whole life for."

Soldiers are already doing that voluntarily but it's pathetic that schools are so unsafe that they feel the need to do that.

If you need armed guards in schools then you've already failed. The US needs to fundamental overhaul of firearms regulations. Just look at the UK - we heavily regulate firearms and have very little gun crime. And guns are still legal here - in fact we have four shotguns (semi-automatic, side-by-side, pump-action and regular) and a rifle in our house, plus I used to be a member of the local gun club.

The US needs to get over its obsession with firearms. The last thing it should be doing is throwing more guns at the situation. And rather than blaming movies or video games it should blame the news and the US military policy of illegal and senseless drone strikes - now THAT would kick off a shit storm.
