Even during the heyday of the sim genre, the people who actually had a proper HOTAS setups were few and far between. At best, people had a basic joystick with a thumb button and trigger, and 2-4 buttons on the base. A gamepad is no worse than this setup, and is VASTLY better than pure kbd/mouse.
FWIW, I replayed Freespace 2 last year on a dual analog gamepad, and it worked great. With some keyboard supplements, of course. Couldn't be arsed to replace my broken logitech joystick since it's basically been doing nothing but collect dust for the past decade or so anyway.

Not all PC gamers have flight sticks, especially in an age where 90% of games only support xInput devices and the 360 pad is the only xInput device out there. As long as they provide DirectInput support as well as xInput, I don't see the issue.
As for the Kickstarter, I'd fund it if they offered a full SP campaign ala Star Citizen. I don't have much interest in multiplayer games. |

TBH sometimes controllers work in space games. I *still* use a PS2 controller on my PC for playing xwing alliance with my friends. A choice would be best of course.
Im still not backing this though - he's asking too much. I dont mind funding but 20 is too much. 10 (that includes the game) and I might bite.
At least they moved away from the central server MMO-esq only option.

(yes, that was sarcasm) I don't care if you play with mouse/KB, keyboard only or a controller. In a game like this I would be using a joystick along with keyboard and mouse, and a controller is basically a handheld joystick. I do care when game designers gimp the game's interface and functionality to support a controller (eg. Borderlands, Borderlands 2, DNF, Skyrim etc.), however they have yet to show off any of the game's interface. |

I'm not going to say never, since we've seen some fucking CRAZY shit happen on a final day of a Kickstarter, but both this and GODUS so far aren't looking likely to make it.

Yeah, I would have put some money towards it but all the cheap seats are taken. If it gets funded I'll buy it when it's released. |

Creston wrote on Dec 13, 2012, 10:55: I wonder if Braben's aware of that. Pretty much certainly - they've gone from 'nothing at all' to showing gameplay. It certainly bolsters my faith and i'm not really worried about how the mechanics look at this early stage. As for gamepads I seem to remember playing with a 'joystick' back in the day so you could argue that's the 'purist' approach (and how many of use have one nowadays - i've got a sidewinder in a cupboard though). It's a PC game so we'll see mouse/kb and if they're offering gamepads in addition it's not necessarily a negative (unless you're looking for negatives..).
I for one am seriously happy to see a resurgence of space games - and for single player too. I took a punt on this because of that (and somewhat due to the nostalgia of course). |

They're using gamepads!!!
This is actually the first video they've shown so far where it makes me go "huh, they're working on a real game."
It's really early alpha, so hopefully they'll sort things out still, because this combat looked pretty boring to me. None of the weapons did a shit's worth of damage, they all fired slower than the Vipers were flying (which makes said weapons useless), and so far the only way to attack seems to be the "Joust" method (ie, fly away, turn around, attack straight on, rinse repeat).
But I will admit that it looks good, and the flight physics looked very sharp (you can see him "drifting" several times).
It'll need a massive, massive end-drive to get to its goal, however, and end-drives don't get generated with one update a week. I wonder if Braben's aware of that.
