Ubisoft announces the release of Far Cry 3, saying the open world sequel is the "highest rated shooter of the year" (though this applies to the Xbox 360 edition). A patch is already available to support the release by updating the game to version 1.02, and this can be found on AtomicGamer, The Patches Scrolls, and Worthplaying. As it dances into stores, here's word on the game: Today, Ubisoft® announced that Far Cry®3, the open world first person shooter from Ubisoft Montreal and Massive, is now available on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Sony PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Windows® PC.
Far Cry 3 has received critical acclaim by reviewers and is currently the highest rated shooter of the year*. In Far Cry 3, players step into the shoes of Jason Brody, a man alone at the edge of the world, stranded on a mysterious tropical island. In this savage paradise where lawlessness and violence are the only sure thing, players dictate how the story unfolds, from the battles they choose to fight to the allies or enemies they make along the way. As Jason Brody, players will slash, sneak, detonate and shoot their way across the island in a world that has lost all sense of right and wrong.
All editions of Far Cry 3 are now available for purchase on the Uplay Shop, at retail outlets throughout North America, and is also available digitally on the Sony PlayStation®Network.
As with every Uplay enabled game, players on all platforms will be able to earn Uplay Units by completing actions in-game and redeem exclusive rewards with those Units. For the complete list of Far Cry 3 Uplay rewards, please visit: http://www.uplay.com
Far Cry 3 is also the first game to use the new Uplay PC Party System. With the Party System, Windows PC players can create a party by inviting their Uplay friends to team up to take on any multiplayer challenge. With the integrated Uplay Friends interface, they can also find new friends and communicate in-game during the multiplayer session.
In January 2013, the Far Cry 3: High Tides downloadable co-op pack will be made available for free on the Sony PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. This exclusive DLC will contain two new story chapters with four to five missions each and four character skins.
The co-op story is far from over. Hoyt's privateers have ambushed the four survivors and taken them hostage. It's up to you and your friends to escape and underground prison and find a way off this island of insanity.
Far beyond the limits of civilization lies an island, a lawless place ruled by violence and human suffering, where your only escape is through drugs or the muzzle of a gun. This is where you find yourself, stranded in a place that has forgotten right from wrong, a place where you must live by the principles of violence to survive.

As for FC3 DoF.. I get it. The game is so incredibly detailed up close, that keeping that lvl of detail in the distance would kill even the most ambitious PC gamer rig out there. That says you think Depth of Field is needed as some sort of performance related tool, it is spelled out there. That is what I was talking about in my comment. Depth of Field has nothing to do with being required for "keeping that lvl of detail in the distance would kill PC rigs", it actually has a negative performance impact. That's all I was saying, that you didn't get it and properly understand what the feature was. Depth of Field in Far Cry 3 can actually hamper performance, that is why many people are turning it off since the game is already pretty tight on framerates with MSAA.

I continued elaborating my point after that sentence by saying that keeping that detail is impossible which is THUS why the distance looks like stale crap and understandably so. That crappiness, imo, could best be disguised by DoF.
I'm not saying what you keep implying I said. Stop being so stubborn? |

Now they can do one of two things: 1. They either present the delusion of a lush jungle in plain view by giving you a distant surface so bald it's like the entire island got cancer or 2. They blur it out so they keep the illusion safely confined in the beautiful lush environment you're in by blurring out the distance. That's you. That's why I posted that's not how Depth of Field works and that in Far Cry 3 Depth of Field has a negative impact on performance, disabling it actually improves performance. Don't take my word for it, go try both before posting about it next time. If you like depth of field then bully for you, no one is telling you not to but don't say they do it because its beneficial performance wise for people because that's not the case.

I'm saying that without it, the illusion of a lush jungle is broken because they couldn't possibly present the same amount of lush detail in the far distance. Removing DoF breaks that illusion, imo, by lifting it's veil and showing you an (almost) coverageless environment in the distance. And thus I said I'd rather stay in the illusion with DoF than being reminded that a couple dozen of meters in the distance, lush jungle gives way to "bald" hills and bland textures.
That's what I said. Nothing about DoF being beneficial to fps. In fact I basically implied the opposite. |

I tell you, I'd have number 2. In fact, Skyrim lacked it to some extent: Paying too much attention to distant landscapes and trees sometimes made me jump back in my chair.
Thank you DoF. I love you. Turning off Depth of Field in Far Cry 3 actually improves performance so no, you don't get it. It's not a simple blur filter without a performance cost.

avianflu wrote on Dec 5, 2012, 10:51: ArsTechnica complains about the enemi AI: the nice thing about FarCry 1 was that enemies in outdoor levels would not simply run straight at you.
"The enemy artificial intelligence is also a low point. The waves and waves of pirates that come at you in many missions have a distressingly low sense of self-preservation, often charging your position at full speed, running out in the open just to be shot down easily. Other times they’ll stand there stupidly at point blank range, waiting for you to pivot around and kill them before they react. When the game wants to turn up the difficulty, it usually just throws more of these pirates at you" As opposed to Far Cry 1 & 2 (at least, 2 on the console) where enemies had binoculars glued to their eyes and could bullseye you from half a mile away with a pistol while they were only 2 pixels tall on your screen?
Or FC2, where the foliage blocked your field of view but the enemy AI's FOV was uninhibited and would detect you through bushes and trees and stuff unless there was actual level geometry between you and the enemy (and even then they'd sometimes get super x-ray vision and see through the goddamn walls and stuff).
I want to try FC3, but those two things were deal breakers for me in the previous games. I have FC2 on the PC that I'm about 8 minutes into, so I don't know if that was a console limitation or not, but I kind of doubt it. |
