Ships Ahoy - Sword of the Stars II: Enhanced Edition & Free DLC

Paradox Interactive announces the release of Sword of the Stars II: Enhanced Edition, an updated edition of Kerberos Productions strategy sequel. This includes all the updates released over the past year, all the game's DLC, and End of Flesh, a new DLC pack that adds new content and an entirely new faction. The new DLC is also being offered for free to owners of Sword of the Stars II in gratitude for suffering through the game's early woes, as they say: "Paradox and Kerberos would like to thank their audience for their patience and support as they worked hard on getting Sword of the Stars II: Lords of Winter into its current condition." Here's a feature list:

  • The new Loa race with a new drive for their ships – the Neutrino Pulse Gate
  • Over 25 new technologies including a new tech tree for cybernetics
  • 10 new weapons and attack systems
  • Expanded ship building options for all six original factions, including new Leviathan class ships
  • 2 new independent races to seduce or bludgeon into your imperial orbit
  • New random encounters and mission types
  • All previously released faction based DLC – the voices, the badges, the avatars, the skins...all of it

You'll either love it or hate it. Personally it is a massive letdown for me. The interface tweaks are better now but if you think it is an improved sots1 then you will be disappointed.

Hivers are plain broken, they are frustrating to play once you are in the mid/end game due to the way the game forces you to participate in battles that are not necessarily your own.

It is still quite long winded to find a system with a certain spec and colonize it. The steps taken to reach, survey and colonize can be awkward for many races.

I havent tried the LOA yet but first indications are that the LOA are a micromanage race that needs babysitting.

I'd pass unless you have nothing else to play.
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I almost bought this but noticed that it didn't have the kind of ship customization you get in GalCiv 2 (where you can customize ships out of parts for a new look). Then I saw it didn't have random galaxies either. That combined with all the hating fanboys in every post I read on the Steam forums sort of put a bad taste in my mouth. I'm still kind of interested though and twenty bucks isn't bad. Can't decide.

I did run across one called Stardrive that has almost everything I want, but it doesn't appear to be out yet. I might check that later.

I'm sort of interested in Distant Worlds too, but the price they charge for that game (when you add up all the addons) tied to the dated appearance isn't entirely enticing.

I'm sure Enhanced has added new bugs, but they have been patching the game twice a week for the last year or so, always adding in things that were missing and fixing issues that were broken. I've put about 68 hours into the game and enjoyed it very much. Haven't touched the new stuff yet but it's a lost of fun.

I admit that the ship building / design is one of my favorite parts as well. That and the real time battles where you can not only use your ships but use tactics and strategies to make the most out of them.

I've been interested in this game for some time as I'm a huge fan of Sins of a Solar Empire, but everything I read was lackluster on SOTS. SO I ended up passing every time I saw it on sale. Especially since it has a fairly low Metascore on Steam. Does this Enhanced Edition fix enough of the issues people had with it to make it a worthy game to play? I found the ship building part interesting and wish Sins had it.

I literally JUST bought it because it was $19.99. I have heard good things recently about it. Besides, it's only twenty bucks.

"Paradox and Kerberos would like to thank their audience for their patience and support as they worked hard on getting Sword of the Stars II: Lords of Winter into its current condition."

Read: Paradox and Kerberos would like to thank all the early adopters for beta-testing and paying for the completion of the game.

In essence, they just Kickstarted everybody. Still, at least they fixed it, which is more than we can say for most fucking publishers.

Most game companies do not update and support a game 5 years after it comes out. Which is what they also did for SoTS1.

I'm not excusing the bad launch at all, but most game companies would simply cut and run after a launch like that. Take a look at Legends of Pegasus and Novacore.

I haven't played it recently so I can't really say what state it's in, but the reason for the low review scores is that it was broken on launch. Literally unfinished. Buttons that crashed the game, buttons that didn't do anything, components that affected elements that weren't implemented yet, etc. etc. etc. And the stuff that did work was clunky and unintuitive.

I bought it because I like making pretty ships, which is what I did in SotS.

I waited for the all clear and was going to fire it up, then got distracted by my stupidly long Steam backlog.

I then heard about the expansion and decided to wait for it.

I finally fired it up this weekend and I have to say I'm impressed.

I really enjoyed my time with it. Granted I'm still a newb and learning the game, but I like what I have seen so far.

If this gets the same level of committment that SoTS1 got, then it is an investment worth making. Even now I think it's worth the price.

Also, the download was really small because they have been sneaking the content in with previous patches.

Is this an RTS? I thought this was a wing commander style space sim game. Reading the details maybe it's a 4x game? Screenshots look very pretty but I can't really figure out what I'll be doing in the game exactly.

44/100 score? OUCH.

*Watches video on steam* Ok, so it's a 4x game where you get to build your ships and fight. Hmmm, looks like many games I've funded on kickstarter and I can play this today!

So...anyone think this is worth $20? I didn't much care for the art until that big purple ship showed up...maybe I'll go find some let's play video's of this.

How is it these days? Is the game kinda... fixed, now? Worth the purchase yet?

Sucks it had a bad launch but now the game is a lot of fun. I picked it up a while back and have put in quite a few hours. Anxious to see what's changed recently, since they are constantly updating and fixing things on a weekly basis. Nice to see there is some new expansion content thrown in as well!

Picked this up at the last Steam sale. One of those games that I'd like to see be successful yet knowing that it was released as a total POS thus hindering the chances of that happening.

Good for them! I applaud their determination and commitment to stay with it and actually finish the game the way they (and the gamers who play it) wanted it...We need more of this zeal in the industry...
