Would you be happy if new games came out at $60 ($50 for PC), but you could buy SP or MP individually for $40 ($30 for PC)?
Sure, I'd most always buy the SP only option! I wonder if that would include co-op though.. that's about the only MP I care about.
That's an interesting question - would co-op more rightfully be part of SP or MP? It's SP content, but played MP. If I were making the decision, I'd probably put it in the MP portion. I think it can be logically defended for being there, and it would upsell many SP players without really being a controversial decision.
Getting as many MP sales as humanly possible is important, as people would likely wander on and give it a shot even if they had little intention of playing long term. That gives them a chance to be hooked, which wouldn't happen if they didn't buy it, and also populate servers.
Another idea, for consoles at least, would be to give a demo of the MP side with limited options, such as only one map or only a few weapons. Again, let's you hook them. On the PC it'd almost definitely be cracked for full play, so it isn't as good an idea, and in both cases you run the risk of putting out a demo with a map that becomes the de_dust, so that people are so happy with the demo they see no reason to buy the full product (which definitely describes me with plenty of demos/shareware 10-20 years ago. Heck, even I did buy Duke Nukem I still spent the vast bulk of my time in the shareware episode.)
