Star Citizen's Record Funding Drive Ends

As noted on the Roberts Space Industries Website, the crowd-sourced fundraiser for Star Citizen blew past its initial $2 million goal, the $4.2 million record set recently by Project Eternity, and their own dream goal of $6 million to finish at $6,238,563. The campaign may be concluded, but they plan on continuing to offer chances to support development of this upcoming space sim, saying: "Going forward, Roberts says, people who backed the project during the crowd funding campaign will have the ability to purchase further tiers or upgrade existing ones at the initial prices. And for those who missed this opportunity, there is still a chance to be a part of the Star Citizen community and back the project but at slightly higher prices. Roberts says it will still be cheaper than purchasing the final product when it is released and it will enable backers to reserve a limited amount of alpha and beta slots that remain. Behind-the-scenes subscription updates during development are also available for purchase. They will provide even more extras and inside info for those who sign up." Here are some stats from the Star Citizen crowd funding campaign updated as of 1:00 pm CST today:

  • Kickstarter backers– 34,397
  • Kickstarter funds pledged - $2,134,374
  • Roberts Space Industries backers – 55,270
  • Roberts Space Industries funds raised - $4,104,189
  • Total backers – 89,667
  • Total funds raised and pledged - $6,238,563

You and El-Rushbo, eh? Right 99.5% of the time? Which crowd-funding failures did you properly predict? I would look through your post history, but I suspect it would be a wild goose chase.

I stand corrected. Thanks nin! At least we know what happened almost two weeks ago. I am glad the space sim genre is getting another chance and support the effort.

SC is going to be at least very interesting to watch unfold and develop. And if those who care about it can all contribute just a little bit, it may just work out. Insert famous JFK quote, no not that one, the one about doing the other thing because it is hard.

You guys are tripping. It's a space game that promises full use of joysticks. Last game that had full use of joysticks was what... in 1999? For space that is. I mean seriously guys, you'll blow 60 bucks on Call of duty 10 or whatever but you won't blow money on a game genre made by a person who made how many great space sim games? I mean come on. wing commander.... need I say more?

And the stuff he's promising is not all that insane. How much detail do you think he's going to put into a star system? Probably not that much... especially when he's promising 100.

I don't get this skepticism about both Roberts and Braben, both have made several critically acclaimed space sims before and there is no reason they can't do it again. SC is probably not going to deliver everything as promised right away and ED is going to take more time before we'll see something because they didn't really expect the lurking interest that still lingers in our collective mind. Both now will have to beat the iron while it's hot and put their no our no, now it's their (SC) (soon to be their, ED) money where their mouth is.

I doubt I'll ever get into the "MMO" servers though, mainly due to the give-aways from the funding drive.

I can't wait for the online world BECAUSE of the giveaways! I want to go get in huge furballs with a Corvette guarded by connies while dozens of pirates ships attack from all sides! I want to dock on that big beautiful ship and kill the crew and take it for myself!

I have no confidence in the people behind elite sorry to say it.

Same here, but i also think Roberts is the guy that got 6 years to make his last game, months ago when he started pitching his Star citizen project you know what he said? "publishers are evil they put pressure on me and i couldn't make it the game i wanted to".

SIX F**KING years microsoft gave him. I really want to Star Citizen to be a good game because i love space games, that said, Id rather be playing multiplayer Elite than a roberts game that promises more than it actually delivers.

Everyone on Bluesnews is synical, get over it.

Its too much of everything. Is it an MMO? Yes. Is it a Single Player Game? Yes. Does it feature Newtonian physics? Does it have fully moddeled cockpits Yes. Will it have a third person view and mouse and keyboard support? Yes. What about joysick support? Duh, yes... YES YES. etc. etc. etc. How can it have all these things and more? How I ask? I have no idea, and I hope that I eat my own fucking words but Im going with Cutter on this one...

That's a big worry on my part as well, though to be fair, adding peripheral support really isn't that big of a deal if you plan properly for it. Devs nowadays are too fucking lazy to support anything because it might require a day's extra work to implement a different control setup.

I think the SP and privateer setup will definitely get made, since that's what everyone wants. Whether he'll get the MMO part going, (or the hostable servers), eh... not sure on that.

To be honest, I wish he'd just forego the single-player and Privateer split and just mesh them together. (like, say, in Privateer itself.) I always find a privateer style game more fun to play if there's a storyline woven into it.

I'm in.

I have my doubts about the realities of this game being released, but I got excited and donated 60 bucks.....I'd be willing to spend more, but that's what I'm willing to loose (about what I lost on Supreme Commander 2, the new Stronghold, Swords of the Stars2, insert other bad games here)

If he manages to pull this project off, it looks to be an incredible experience and everyone wins.

I doubt he will be able to make good on all the stretch goals for the initial game. They seem quite ambitious. I just hope he can put a decent game together, add the stretch goals to a sequel/expansion and make that free to the original backers rather than try to half-ass everything.

This is exactly how I feel about this. The funding model makes me worried for how the multiplayer will work since people are already buying in-game items.

I was very tempted to fund this (would have been my first "kickstarter" funding) mainly due to who he is and the sheer amount of work that went into this BEFORE and during the campaign. I will 100% buy this at full price for the single player/private server portion after it gets a few reviews from reviewers who play it with a stick instead of a point and click. I doubt I'll ever get into the "MMO" servers though, mainly due to the give-aways from the funding drive.

Srsly dood, you got a real hard on for this particular project. Give Roberts his due, at least he did a year of prework creating a product that he could actually put on display and sell.

Im still leaning towards Cutter's camp...

The pre-alpha gameplay videos and the sheer number of backers have convinced me this game will see the light of day, although not anytime soon but, and dont get me wrong here I really wish for this game to succeed in all the best possible ways, I remain unconvinced that it will ever live up to the hype that Roberts generated in this campaign.
