Panasonic manufacture their own panels too. They supply us anyway. Our eval tech went over to JP to chat with their techies too.

Err, no one said you bought a piece of shit at any point here, no clue where you got that from. I think there are other TVs with better quality but thats true of everything. If you're happy with it then who cares. I was just saying buying in a best buy showroom is pretty much like playing pin the tail on the donkey. |

What I do is just find a bunch of models I want to evaluate then go to a local shop where they usually have an actual dark room and somewhat realistic viewing setups. Well to be fair Best Buy used to have a dark room. I don't think anyone ever used it. |

I liked the picture quality better when I compared the screens at Worst Buy... then bought on Amazon.com. MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Its your money but big box store showrooms are the worst possible place to make comparisons. Most of the TVs are running in demo mode with brightness and contrast dialed to 10, the color accuracy is poor and you won't get proper viewing distance, level, etc.

Yup. Well not necessarily PQ, but the color thing was a load of BS. It was marketing BS, they basically had claimed to invent new colorspace by using yellow |

Ruins the display to the point that the manuals specifically tell you 'don't use this or it'll break early'. To be fair to shopfloor owners, unless you over-saturate everything, the TV's picture is going to look like shit against the ridiculous amount of lighting going on in the store.
If your TV at home is in direct sunlight, it's going to look like shit too.
That said, Best Buy is indeed notorious for deliberately fudging settings so that the expensive TVs with the highest markup look the best. Comparing on image quality at Best Buy is a fool's errand.

Edit: Damn I was reading that Slashdot thread a lot longer than I thought, heh. Beamer beat me to all the points. |

Everything at BB is in torch mode, anyway. They're running in Vivid, or whatever the manufacturer offers, with the blues cranked way up and the brightness so high that it will burn a TV out in no time. No color is accurately displayed.
Some people run these modes when they get home, because they "pop" more, but are horribly inaccurate. And drastically shorten the lifespan of the TV. |

Best thing is to talk to the tuners out there. Sharp is cheaper, but they have no high end product offering. Nothing to rival the best from LG, Samsung and Panasonic. They're a mid-level brand. |

Cutter wrote on Nov 5, 2012, 09:46: Sharp is still around? That surprised me even more. There are only 3 panel makers out there... Samsung, LG, and Sharp. Sharp bet the farm on large screens, LG went mostly with smaller screens, and Samsung did it all.
I have a 60" Sharp Aquos Quattron, and I actually prefer that 4-color LCD technology to other contrast / color solutions out there. The products are good, but the company has been obviously mis-managed. They are scrambling right now to go to the smaller screens.
They seem pretty ripe for an Apple or even a Microsoft take over. (since MS is getting into producing their own hardware). The last thing we'd want (as consumers) is to lose a 3rd competitor in the panel market. Samsung would pretty much have everyone by the balls, then, since LG isn't that big in the market. |
