CD Projekt RED Plans/Rumors

The Witcher Forums have some tidbits from Piotr Gnyp's Twitter Feed with some tidbits from an upcoming interview with CD Projekt RED that reveal some of their plans (thanks Gamer's Hell). Here's their summary:

  • Unnanounced dark fantasy title (Witcher 3?) is in more advanced stages than Cyberpunk 2077.
  • Cyberpunk 2077 is the first in a series, both games are larger than The Witcher, both are multiplaform
  • 2013 will be smaller stuff for CDP RED, no Witcher-caliber release
  • Witcher for iPhone - too early to say anything, but not impossible

EDIT: missed some stuff:

  • no Witcher for PS3 next year, they want TW on Playstation, but not current gen
  • both TW3 and CP2077 will appear on next gen consoles

Do they want that? I have never gotten that impression. I also don't get how consoles are dead to them. It's all they ever talk about. They pay good lip service to the PC when it makes them look benevolent but that's it.
Sry, my bad. I meant to the investors consoles are dead, because this platform is no longer a growth platform. Earning a shitload of money is of no interest to them. All they care is the short term growth of their investment. So they will pull out after the new console generation probably will fail in generating enough revenue growth.

*sigh* Big business is so wonderful!

Edit: And let's not forget those developers who were doing perfectly well producing their own games and then sold out to those same publishers. Here's looking at you Bioware.

I never care about devs selling out. After all, if someone offered me 600 million dollars for something, I'd sell it in a heartbeat. What really irritates me are those dipshit developers who sell out, and then start bitching about how hard life is under publisher X like two weeks later. So they make a new studio, and then sell that to the SAME FUCKING PUBLISHER. (HI PETER MOLELEYEEHENNENEENNEEUUXUXUXXX!!!)

At least Bioware has had the EA Corporate Muzzle on firmly since they got bought, because everyone there is still tiptoeing the party line about how fucking fantastic it is to work for EA.

Diversification sends them packing. It's better to bet on 3 or 4 massive 'AAA' titles a year, rather than to have 3 or 4 times that number of mid-budget titles across several genres. If it's not selling like CoD, it's not selling.
It's not like they do not want that. The majors cant go back anymore.

They have to deliver a huge revenue growth or else ... the investors will pull out. Which they will do anyway because the near hysterical growth rates of the recent decade cant be reproduced anymore. The market is saturated and no new console can change that. Sure, you can still make millions of dollars with console games, make a hefty profit, but there is no more additional growth. And therefore consoles are dead to them.

Some of the other stuff you are saying may well be true, but I don't think they got into this position entirely by accident and the big, bad investors are all to blame. When you create unrealistic expectations and pass them off to people, they will expect what you say you can deliver.

The big publishers are the ones who continually burned the bridges behind them. I don't think they want to go back.

Edit: And let's not forget those developers who were doing perfectly well producing their own games and then sold out to those same publishers. Here's looking at you Bioware.

I am so excited for Cyberpunk 2077, it's not even funny. If it wasn't for Shadowrun coming out in the next year, I'd probably go nuts just waiting for it.

I see they are trying to hire several people for a "RPG based on Cyberpunk" and a "RPG set in a Dark Fantasy World".. Hopefully they find some good people to fill those positions!

Pretty much a winning formula no matter how they do it. With the all the game developer talent in the world, I just don't understand how we don't get more games of the scifi/cyberpunk variety like CDP RED are promising. The Witcher reskinned and restorylined into cyberpunk would be GoTY for a lot of people just on paper, with the depth the developers put into that game.

With how well the Shadowrun Returns kickstarter did without even a glimpse of what the game looked like (which we're now seeing is looking very, very good), the genre is an untapped goldmine.
Over a year to wait for this. Probably two. Painful

The problem is that publishers, shareholders, venture capitalists etc. no longer associate things like deep/complex RPGs with earning potential.

They abandon games that don't appeal to the twitch/cover-shooter/QTE crowd. They can't make money. They can't sell 8 million copies. Therefore they are irrelevant.

As well as Xcom EU did and appears to still be doing, I don't see big publishers rushing to make more games like it. Diversification sends them packing. It's better to bet on 3 or 4 massive 'AAA' titles a year, rather than to have 3 or 4 times that number of mid-budget titles across several genres. If it's not selling like CoD, it's not selling.

This.

CD Projekt... the developer that removed the DRM from their release in a patch, without communicating it to their publishers. Haha, fuckign heroes!

They got sued for that...

Haha to me, that makes them all the more awesome!

Also, what about those marvelous patchreleases that include entirely new and extra content? CDProjekt is just fantastic. Even if you don't like there games, you'd be crazy to disagree.

"The court did not venture an opinion on Namco Bandai's suggestion that CD Projekt had violated their agreement by spontaneously disabling DRM from PC versions of The Witcher 2."

However, that same French court did hold that Namco Bandai was entitled to The Witcher 2 distribution in the Western Europe, Central or South America, and the Asia-Pacific regions, not THQ as CD Projekt asserted.

Does that mean that it was never really brought up in court by Namco Bandai then?

The court would have to give some kind of ruling if it was part of the case. Either they were guilty of violating the agreement or they weren't. Or maybe they settled that part of it out of court.
