More "Dragonborn" Skyrim DLC Hints

The Bethesda Softworks Forums explore the implications of hints about upcoming DLC for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim found in a recent beta patch for Bethesda's RPG sequel. There are further indications that this will be named Dragonborn, which corresponds to a trademark filing in May. Thanks Xbox: The Official Magazine via MCV.

What was a slap in the face about the Hearthfire DLC? It's 5 bucks and totally optional.

Requiring Hearthfire for all future DLC would be a slap in the face. I don't get the big rage about it.

How about the fact that they devoted their resources towards that (which by the way already exists in mod form), instead of making an actual expansion.

The whole team didn't stop and ship Hearthfire, it was a very simple piece of content to build. There are user modifications that do the same thing already, one of them was knocked together by a college student in a week.

well maybe he picked his words incorrectly or maybe i read too much into it. His words: "not these mod quality size DLC's". I guess you have to ask what he meant by "these". Normally i would assume he meant what was referenced in the article unless he otherwise states. The only thing referenced in the article was the unannounced dlc.

I was referencing the two previous released Skyrim DLC's. As i said, i want a full blown expansion, not short half assed DLC's that most mods can out do.

Well tough shit. You aint getting any. Expansions have gone the way of the Dodo since publishers have learned that they can squeeze out less content for more money. Why is that? Because gamers are by definition stupid immature sheep (present company excepted of course) who will pay for shit in a box basically.
I have a nifty blue line!

Dragonborn, huh? Well, that's certainly unique. Luckily there was no indication that you might be this "Dragonborn" character in the main game, so they'll have a fresh perspective to work from.

Bethesda must already be one year into developing their next game because there's no way these DLC are taking much manpower to make. The latest Skyrim patch was a slap in the face to their fans and customers.

I really like the sound of this. I thought it rather dumb that they (hardly) mentioned the fact that you're the freaking DRAGONBORN, saviour of Skyrim, Sovngard and the entire Tamriel, in Dawnguard. I only remotely applauded the implementation of the undead dragon.

So yeah. Looking forward to this one.

I still want to get Dawnguard, but the $20 price is too much. Hopefully I can nab it for half that this Christmas. Hearthfire... well I'm a sucker for housing in games, especially when it's customizable, so I'll probably have that one first.

Welp, I hope it's good. I'd like to do a new playthrough with Dawnguard and this over Xmas.

Gearbox collaborated with Triptych Games again (the ex-3D Realms studio who worked on DNF) for the first BL2 DLC. I fully believe that they threw it together in the past 6, or maybe 8, weeks because it is overall of a noticeably lower quality than the rest of the game. Biggest thing for me was the sloppy terrain work, which may or may not have been the root cause of nasty performance hitches when PhysX is turned up.

You're welcome to your opinion but I don't agree, I highly doubt it was thrown together that quickly. Either way, it doesn't really change the fact that Skyrim deserves better than typical 4-8 DLC sizes we see for other games which I think we both agree on.

Eh, the BL2 DLC was mostly developed during release, there's no way they produced it that quickly otherwise. I agree though that I'd rather see full on Skyrim expansions as opposed to DLC. BL2 is the kind of game that lends itself to little 4-8 hour jaunts. Skyrim is the kind of game you want to pick up and play for lengthy periods instead of a few hours.

I doubt they would use the Dragonborn moniker for anything less than an expansion so at least there is some hope.

Again, I think it's their incredibly sluggish time table that is screwing them here. The first Borderlands 2 DLC lasted me about 8 hours the first, mostly exhaustive playthrough, but if they're going to have those every 4 weeks, that's enough to keep me engaged. Especially since you can replay the tail-end stuff of it on a daily basis (oh gods, the loot...), and with other characters at different levels to earn fixed rewards, etc.

Taking 6 months to come out with an 8-hour DLC for Skyrim, is like slaking the thirst of a dehydrated man with a drop of water on his tongue... Simply not enough for how long it took to get here. (That's aside from the fact that 8 hours in Skyrim is very, very little. For BL2 it's much more significant.) From what Gearbox has done so far with DLC, giving them six whole, uninterrupted months probably would result in a massive expansion pack at least half the size of their base game. THAT is what I would expect from Bethesda, what I really want from them.

I'm hoping that that these baby DLCs are meant as half-assed, stop-gap measures, while most of their staff is working on such an add-on. Not for nothin', I'd shell out another $40 or so for Skyrim 1.5 this holiday season... Unfortunately, you have to think it ain't coming, because if it were, they'd be promoting the living bejeezus out of it.

I thought the later DLCs for Fallout: New Vegas were pretty good and meaty. If we could get a few like those for Skyrim I'd be OK with that. Now that I think about it the first DLC for F:NV was pretty weak too.

Yeah, too bad Obsidian made those. I suppose it would be pretty good timing for Bethesda to be doing Fallout 4 next, while they're occupied with Project Eternity. Then they'll have the base framework for another better Fallout game once they're done with that.

Bethesda has said there wouldn't be expansions for Skyrim, unlike Morrowind and Oblivion. Only DLCs. I thought the later DLCs for Fallout: New Vegas were pretty good and meaty. If we could get a few like those for Skyrim I'd be OK with that. Now that I think about it the first DLC for F:NV was pretty weak too.
