Loot Drop's Tom Hall/Brenda Brathwaite Kickstarter

This Kickstarter Campaign from Loot Drop seeks funding for an old-school RPG from this studio founded by John Romero and Tom Hall (thanks Rob). They are looking for a million dollars to develop "a classic RPG from the days when RPGs were king" designed by Hall (Anachronox) and Brenda Brathwaite (Wizardry), though if they hit the $1.9 million plateau, this will actually become two separate games, one designed by each. Like so many Kickstarter campaigns, there is no concise summary of the game, but here is their outline of the game world:

  • Exploration: Explore a richly detailed world, home to unique, dangerous and sometimes crafty creatures who may be friend or foe.
  • Treasure: Loot castles, caverns and dungeons and defeat hordes of creatures in a world where your skill and cunning are key.
  • NPCs: At least five known NPC races call this world home. Forge alliances with them and do their bidding - or be their undoing.
  • Quests: Solve hundreds of quests on your way to discovering and uncovering the secrets of the world.
Multiple Endings: The smallest of intentions sometimes matters far more than you know. It is a world alive with memories.
  • Multiple Beginnings (Stretch Goal): The endings in one game affect the beginnings in another. Import your characters from one world to another.
  • Combat: Turn-based combat harkens back to the days when spells and swords hit hard and last-second healing spells saved the day.
  • NPC Enemies (Stretch Goal): What once was a relatively peaceful world becomes much more dangerous not only for you, but for those who live there. New NPCs come complete with an expanded game area and quests.

First-person != FPS. FPS = First-Person Shooter. Emphasis on the shooter part. Just because your game has a first-person perspective does not automatically make it a shooter.

Anyway, I thought this was going to be a generic fantasy dungeon crawl but the story they've released thus far is refreshingly sci-fi.

1st Person or 3rd, I will be highly surprised if they do not meet their primary goal to fund. I'd be even more surprised if they haven't learn from Obsidian. It is best to keep dangling a new carrot every couple days. If they can start a slow steady release of info and stretch goals they will have no trouble meeting their goals.

Still I'd rather not have an old school 1st person RPG. Legend of Grimrock was fun but not as fun as an isometric cRPG could have been. On the other hand too much of anything is never a good idea either.

So as you can tell I am on the fence and feeling no rush to jump off.

edit: @Mr. Tact, that comment was more about KS as a whole than just Loot Drop's KS. At the rate we are going there will be dozens of larger studios all trying to pitch a project to us via KS. Over all not a bad thing but we can only fund so many. As others have stated I would like to see something release before putting too much more of my money into projects. I've already spent over three hundred and Eternity has yet to fund.

IT seems highly unlikely. The only thing this company has done so far is isometric games. And "Old Skool RPG" does not man first person at all.

The very first text on the Kickstarter page:
"Old School RPG is a classic first-person, fantasy/sci-fi RPG brought to you by award-winning veterans. Create 4 characters and explore!"

The two games they bounce around are both FPS free movement with turn based combat.

Holy crap! I'm in. Sold. I'd back the Coles over Romero any day!

It seems to be picking up steam... this runaway train that Kickstarter has become.

Loot Drop will be funded no doubt but I have my reservations. Two RPGs (plus a Pen & Paper version of one) in twelve months time? Thinking they may have got a bit too rambunctious.

I'm in for at least the minimum. I loved Anachronox and Jagged Alliance 2. And I would love to see Romero turn things around for those of you who still hate him. Although the Internet Animosity for him has never reached the levels to which Derek Smart still claims... I know some of you may pitch in the minimum ($15) just so that you can again say John screwed you. Hey to each his own.

No seriously... its all good. I think he is a big enough person to realize his name still carries some or maybe a truck load of negative memories. I never invested emotionally into Daikatana or Romero so when I saw how bad it was I just enjoyed the show... since he set himself up for that with all that crazy hype.

As far as their Kickstarter I need to see something that gives me an idea of what they are doing besides all the references to "old school". Have they been working on something already? How are they going to do this (possibly two old school cRPGs) in just one year? Too many questions at this point. So I hope they give some details soon.

Seriously though... I never played Anachronox, and By Wizarddry design, if they mean anything like what D.W. Bradley came up with (Dungeon Lords)... I'll pass.

If you can see this...

Brenda is the one that did Wiz 8, DW didn't do that. That said this week we should have info on the digital download locations for Dungeon Lords MMXXII, which someone took DW's work and supposedly updated it and finished it. We'll see.

I have two nuts.

I will give one to a proper Dungeon Keeper based game.

And I'll give the other to a proper Wizardry 8 based game.

Looks like I might be down to a uni-nut.

As for Anachronox meets Wiz 8, if they could really deliver it, I'll take a copy.

J.H.C.

I may lose them both!

Its going to be like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

They are going to take the first game and flip it upside down.

I don't understand how the $1.9 million goal is supposed to work? If they make $1.8 million, the money gets spent on one game, if they get $100K more, they make two. You can't make a separate game - well, not a good one at the quality we are expecting - with so little money, so how can they claim to do that without compromising at least one, more likely both, games? Sure, they can likely share are assets, engine, etc, but there's a lot that can't be shared.

Strikes me as making this overly ambitious. I'd rather they do one game really well rather than two half-decent ones.

But isn't this Romero's 3rd or 4th company since Ion Storm? The guy was given a TOWER, and a blank check and while Anachronax was interesting (from the demno), Daikatana was a failure and the only saving grace from it was Deus Ex (which wasn't even his).

I remember one of the companies Romero and Hall started after Ion Storm was a mobile game developer that basically tried seeking out partnerships and then dissolved... I'm thinking their rationale for doing a Kickstarter is that they've gotten sick of making games to somebody else's whims.

I think John is well aware of his reputation. It's interesting that despite him being CEO and a coder, he's promoting this as the Tom and Brenda show.

One worry is that this studio has only a couple of facebook games under its belt (that I can tell): Ghost Recon Commander and Pettington Park. GRC got good reviews, and being a tactical game is at least similar to the isometric perspective classic party-based RPGs use.

It's interesting that Notch and Chris Avellone support this.
