Black Mesa Released

They're waiting for you Gordon, at the Black Mesa Website, where they now offer the long-awaited first release of the Black Mesa modification to bring the gameplay from Half-Life to the Source engine (thanks ochentay4). Here's word from the wiki:
Black Mesa (formerly Black Mesa: Source) is a Half-Life 2 total conversion remaking of Valve Software's award-winning PC game, Half-Life.

Utilizing the Source engine, Black Mesa will reintroduce the player as Doctor Gordon Freeman, along with the original cast of memorable characters and environments seen in Half-Life. Black Mesa was built and founded on the basis that Half-Life: Source didn't fully live up to the potential of a Source engine port of Half-Life. As such, Black Mesa was founded to fully reconstruct the Half-Life universe utilizing Source to its fullest potential in terms of art detail, level sizes and code features. It should be noted that the project is being built from the ground up and is not a simple port of Half Life maps and models into the Source Engine. The idea is to remake the storyline used in Half Life into a new polished Source Engine version with new models, maps, soundtrack, voice acting and textures.

This total conversion will not require Half-Life: Source to play - only a copy of any Source Engine game installed on Steam. For more details, check the System Requirements.

Fantastic remake (yes, remake. It's essentially the same game)

The introductory sequence and the interactions with people before the meltdown (I gave the guy TP ) are just awesome.
A ton of time and work was put into this and it shows.
The revamped MED and HEV chargers stand out as some extremely impressive work, as do the various key objects in the world including laser housing/equipment and other mechanical meshes.

Couple things are dragging it down a bit for me:

-Yes, the grunt's voices are pretty bad. Over-acted and just campy sounding. Bad dialogue, too.
The original's were much better.

-Some of the later levels are a tad uninspired compared to the earlier. The geometry and textures take a hit.

-The grunts have inhuman aim and tracking skills (wallhack, anyone). The milisecond your head is out of cover, it's getting hit with a bullet.
The game is hard, which is great, I love it, but their aim is cheap.

Overall, the experience was well worth the wait.
Even without the nostalgia of playing through HL again, this game would still stand on it's own as a great shooter with fantastic set pieces and innovative art direction.

I think they've upped the difficulty level - the bullsquid and houndeye are noticeably more potent. The helicopter gunships are very mobile and do decent damage. Still, I think the difficulty level is just right.

Being that Half Life was such a great game I had to play it and have about an hour into it now. It's more fun then digging up a classic to play because many areas are slightly changed and it makes many of the puzzles harder to remember. Great job. A few times as others mentioned the voices can seem a tad off but once again to have something subtle and different in the game makes it worthwhile.

Made it as far as Blast Pit last night, they did a superb job on it. The little additions so far are excellent and fit nicely into the game, and they are very minor. Only complaint I would have is the grunts voices are kinda lame.

I really want to play it but if I'm going to play an updated version of a classic like Half -Life I want to play the whole thing. However I shudder to think how long it may take them to complete it considering how long it took to get this much out. Hopefully they can finish it faster.

I watched my daughter playing the opening levels and I am struck with just how professional the mod looks. I started tracking this mod the day its page went up on moddb many moons ago; it still feels a bit surreal to see it played given how long ago I wrote it off.

As I've said before... I've had very little interest in this since they changed it from a re-make to a re-imagination. If I ever do bother to download it... it will probably when they actually finish it... with Xen and all.

/shrug

Wow. Trying to be nice atm so all I can say is wow.

What? More likely "trying to be not a fanboy atm". Its his opinion, and even I thought to download it only when its completely finished, because somehow I think it will take at least half the time it took them to complete this piece, to complete Xen too. And then I would have to play it from the beginning again anyway.
I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

Was amazed years ago when I saw the first teaser for this but I admit I basically forgot about it over the years. Nice to see it finally released.

Any word on when it's coming out on Steam? I have enough else to keep me busy ATM and I'd rather have it updated automatically/etc on Steam.

When you install it you will have it in steam, and must load it through there as well.

But of course. I actually had a hard time finding it, must've blended in with a white/light background. I ended up jostling it to the floor on accident and then noticed it.

If Valve had hired these guys they could have sold a slightly more polished version of BMS for $15 and turned a tidy profit I'd bet.

I'm happy to have it as is for free though. Thanks BMS team!

What?

Can't a person not like what the project evolved into?
Or am I supposed to kiss their ass for actually getting something out? (Although still incomplete)

Do whatever you want, I doubt anyone actually cares. If you won't try out a free game based on your own idea of their re-imagining being bad, there really isn't anything more to be said.
