Yup I remember him from my GF days too, and when I say he was a cool guy it is not something said because of the circumstances, it's genuine and true. I didn't really have any direct dealings with him, but this still feels very close to home.

I do remember those threads where he'd highlight the experience of working in his role, and helping out anyone interested in doing the same. I don't think he'd want anyone to think differently about doing so even after this.

If we attacked an embassy here in the US - all hell would break loose. I think they should be mowed down in the streets. Make a statement. Then pull out of those areas and remove all help (read as $). Sink or swim assholes.

Agreed. People talk about "isolationism" as a bad thing. Personally I've been hoping it would be re-adopted in America for decades.
