People are seriously overestimating next-gen capabilities.
Let's wait and see what Microsoft says. Some jackass at AMD bragging in summer 2011 is mostly meaningless. He's removed from the process and likely too out of touch with the industry to remember the whole Emotion Engine thing, and basically any Playstation launch ever.
I doubt Microsoft will do bragging quite like this. They'll use comparisons that are reaches, they are selling after all, but they'll avoid the hyperbole that keeps biting Sony in the ass. Even Sony has learned that such hyperbole goes over extremely poorly.
As for the guy involved here, I still say his lighting comparison is vague and meaningless. What does "close" mean? And how so? Dynamic ambient occlusion and realtime global illumination are a given. What about shadows, is he including that in "lighting?" We can't get near what Avatar did in real time, but how "close" are we talking? We can get real time dynamic soft shadows, fine. Maybe we can even get every item creating shadows. How about people's noses creating shadows on their faces, though?
