WoW Adding All Race Access

Blizzard announces that all races will be available to all World of Warcraft players as of the upcoming version 5.0.4 patch for the MMORPG. The new version is currently planned for release on Tuesday, and here's word on this change it will bring:
With the release of patch 5.0.4, we’re making all the races of Azeroth playable by anyone, no matter which version or expansion of World of Warcraft they own. This includes the enigmatic pandaren, who will become available for play when Mists of Pandaria is released on Tuesday, September 25. We want the entire World of Warcraft community to be able to embrace their inner goblin, blood elf, worgen, draenei, or pandaren from the moment they step foot into the world of Azeroth.

Now, the only hard part will be choosing a name. Who will you be next?

Well, I sort of hate to bring it up given how you don't really want to hear about other games, but GW2 is quite good about letting you jump in and out of the game.

For PvE, you can jump in, do some hearts, get some karma, go around looking for Points of Interests/Vistas, do jumping puzzles or just craft and then log out whenever you want to. Most of these are usually short and typically don't take long at all to do aside from some tougher puzzle areas. And Heart progress gets saved so you can log in for 15 minutes, finish half a heart and log out. Log back in a week later and you can finish the other half of that heart if you wanted to. PvE's very free-form in that regard.

On the PvP side, sPvP auto-levels you to 80 and lets you get the best gear right off the bat. Matches don't usually take all that long as well and all the glory points you get from matches are there to get or craft cooler looking gear that has no effect on your stats. Sort of like TF2 in a MMO. It even has a lobby to let you pick specific match rooms.

WvWvW lets you jump in, capture some forts, win (or lose) that and log off whenever you want without any downsides. As a bonus, do well and you'll gain exp, gold and loot that benefits your PvE character.

Only Dungeons really force you to put aside some time to complete them with friends and they're like short mini-raids from what I've played. The level 30 one from the beta lasted 2 or 3 hours with 5 people so I don't think Dungeons will require half a day to complete like Raids do in other MMOs.

In my experience with the betas, GW2 seems like a great game if you just want to jump in, have fun doing whatever the hell you want to do and then jump out if you're short on time.

First, most of us are talking from experience in the betas, not "the next game we are going to play but haven't yet".

Second, how many MMO's do you know of have actually had overwhelmingly positive buzz from beta players? Most MMO beta's have people screaming that the game is far from release worthy. So, you don't have to "wait to hear"... the talk is already out there.

Third, in reference to a GOOD free to play game (box purchase only) vs. a subscription game... that will have a lot of appeal for a lot of folks. Granted they have a store for micro-transactions, but after buying the initial game, there is absolutely zero FORCED reason to buy anything in the store.

Anyway... you'll find out sooner or later, as you "wait to hear".

Yeah, a bunch of us already know we are going to love GW2 because we have been playing it.

One. More. Week. Trying so hard to not go nuts waiting.

They still have subscribers. They have a new expansion coming. They have Diablo 3 to distract. Most comments made on Blue's and many game sites are on Wow stories. After 7 years. Not too bad.

Pretty sure that they are scared that GW2 is going to make them bleed more subscriptions.

While it obviously won't kill them... the temptation of a FRESH and GOOD "Pay for box only" / F2P business-modeled game, will probably suck quite a few players from WoW... and they are already bleeding subs even without GW2 as competition. (People are finally getting sick of WoW)

So, this is obviously to prevent some of the bleeding, IMO.

The really funny thing is... Arenanet was created by a faction of ex-blizzard devs.

I'm a tad confused - surely this means that also need to open up Po's sorry the Pandorian starting area to everyone whether they have the expansion or not. Same holds true for the worgen I guess.

PS Me like many other nether knew nor cared that pandorians were in warcraft lore 6 years before the first Kung Fu Panda movie. Learning it know changes nothing.

On the surface, the Parasite expects the doctor to heal them for free, the farmer to feed them out of charity. How little they differ from the pervert who prowls the streets, looking for a victim he can ravish for his grotesque amusement.

On topic: What Blizz 'should' be doing is offering all expansions and the base game with Pandaria if they want to attract new players. Right now the barrier for entry at end game is just to high. Yes, they offer a bundled WoW + BC but there's also WotLK for $20 and Cataclysm is still going for $40, and you have another coming out in a month for $40. If they want to attract a new customer base, asking for $120 just to get all the content is rather steep.

Not that Blizz would 'ever' offer say a $60 bundle for all (sans perhaps Pandaria). They are still making far to much selling it all desperately.

I'm actually selling 2 "Catch-up" packs in my store for $34.99. Base game + all current expansions.

Blizzard doesn't just pop out ideas. Blizzard studies reams and reams of data and comes to conclusions.

I'm guessing that they determined that the majority of their dedicated player base would be buying the expansion for the end game content regardless. Giving away the first few levels (let's face it - two or three hours of gaming) will draw in those who aren't sure about whether to buy it. Instead of $40 plus renewing a $15 subscription, they just need to renew. Low price point, more customers. Many of them will check out the new zones and leave, but many will pay to keep playing and/or to level up into the new content.

Imagine this, Blizzard offered to sell races like EQ2 does. Would people be happy with that? No the haters would cry. Wait, imagine if they gave them away for FREE? People would cry. Blizzard seems to cause a lot of tears.

In fact this is a good business decision. Once you hit 60, you will need to buy the expansions to progress further.

So all they are doing is allowing new / returning botters to choose the race they want without buying the expansion first.
