Here's the problem. It depends on the purpose of the player as well as the designer. If the player is playing in order to "learn" something or experience something, then the player will most likely appreciate the designer's desire to teach something or communicate something. If the player is playing for escape or pure enjoyment, he will most likely resent the focus being pulled away from his entertainment.

I especially like the author commenting that some people will be emotional about his ending, but others who "aren't in touch with their feelings" might not like it. It's a bit pretentious to declare that just because someone does not react to your ending the way you'd like them to that the fault lies with them...
