Game had a lot of props at the time because it was one of the earliest truly cinematic experiences. Big cutscenes, loads of plot and character, great music.

Damn, even the "achievements" are pathetic. They couldn't at least use mp3's of the original OST to preserve the original sound? It's like they don't even want people to buy it.

It was the first FF game for a large generation of gamers so I get the FF7 hype. The game itself was an interesting culmination of several different subsystems Square used in previous games. It doesn't always work but it was really interesting and easy to get immersed in. Tons of side content ranging from the silly to recruitable characters.

I agree though that there are better games in the series

Also comedy gold:

A game that came out when most people didn't even have dialup internet now requires a persistent internet connection to play.

Minecraft is not 8 bit. FF7 is not really that great, I don't know why everyone goes gaga over it. It was impressive for it's time, but some of the other games in the series are better. And a better way to relive it is with the old pc release and some of the fan mods, or emulate the psx version. I don't know why square bothered with this and updated so little when they could have just rereleased the original version.

What a lazy release...still using midi? don't get me wrong, I had my AWE64 back in MS-DOS/Win95-98 days and I had a huge blast messing with all that and I still have my midi collection but thing is...FF7 midis were horrible in comparison to the original soundtrack. Also, no graphic filter? this is a 1997 game, it need filters! the game will look horrible otherwise. I'll have to wait and see but for now, I'm definitely not buying.

MIDI FTW, but only with good instruments (e.g., a true sound card, keyboard, or even a software synthesizer) and none of that FM crap.

I'll pass. PLayed it to death on the PS1 and that is where I will leave my memories. The difference between this and say minecraft will be the fact that minecraft has always looked like that. FF7 has good memories that will simply not stand up to my expectations.
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

JRPG is it? This is no RPG.

It's 2012 ffs.

I agree. If you're going to re-release something and charge more than $10 for it, you'd better make it as good as possible.

It's getting the right banks though. But yeah, there's something special about midi music, especially on a really good soundfont set. Nothing really beat the old awe64 and Yamaha sets, they were great.

Yep. I have often found midi music can be quite good and memorable. I have fond memories of many CT, FF6, & FF7 songs. It is really crazy what people did with the audio tech of the era even not on PCs. What they did on PCs was often even better, but both were great.

The point is the original Playstation versions did not use midi, but the PC release stupidly did. They did not restore the original music for this re-release. It sounds like shit.

I appreciate the MIDI nostalgia everyone is having here. That said, absolutely agree with StingingVelvet. It didn't matter what soundfonts you had back in 97, it sucked beyond balls compared to the OST. Every single track on the PC version was pathetic, the most obvious of which were One Winged Angel and Main Theme (aka Overworld). I am blown away they didn't update the midi to the OST for, arguably (FFVI is still my favorite), Nobuo Uematsu's greatest work for this release. It's 2012 ffs.

I've heard both, I'm still rather partial to midi music for it.

Oddly one of the reasons why I wouldn't buy this is because of the $14 price tag. That's pretty bloody steep for a 15 year old game.

Meh I never found minecraft appealing. And nope, it doesn't pass muster at $14. I did consider it, but both times I tried to buy it, it repeatedly, redirected me to the EU site and wanted me to pay in euro's or GBP.

But why would you simply replay your copy when you can "Share your profile with friends online to find out who is the ultimate FINAL FANTASY fan."

Ultimate Final Fantasy Fan=Sucker in this scenario, particularly if you already have paid for/own this game.

My favorite was always the Roland MT-32. I remember playing old sierra games when they first supported that, and WOW what a difference that made. It seemed like every game in the 90's had a MT-32 track.. and it made playing those supported games a completely different experience in most cases.

Anyone remember Silpheed & Sorcerian? Sierra brought those over from japan and they had two of the most intensely awesome MT-32 soundtracks I'd ever heard. The title screen to Sorcerian used to send chills down my spine.
