MIDI music can be pretty awesome with the right hardware or soundfont/banks loaded.
My favorite was always the Roland MT-32. I remember playing old sierra games when they first supported that, and WOW what a difference that made. It seemed like every game in the 90's had a MT-32 track.. and it made playing those supported games a completely different experience in most cases.
Anyone remember Silpheed & Sorcerian? Sierra brought those over from japan and they had two of the most intensely awesome MT-32 soundtracks I'd ever heard. The title screen to Sorcerian used to send chills down my spine.
