Personally, I'd rather let devs/publishers do their own thing than need MS's permission to publish for Windows.

Plus, you can forget $60- if MS has a monopoly on PC gaming you're looking at a much higher number.

So much so that if that means taking a step back or simply pausing graphics quality for a while that would be a more acceptable than XBOXing PCs.

This is the argument Valve/etc. should be making- not talking about DX9 Vs. OGL.

I agree, and side-loading will ALWAYS be possible, but Microsoft will offer an app store that competes directly with Steam. People will publish on one, on the other, or on neither. There will be restrictions to get onto either, as there is today on Steam, but people will be able to bypass the stores altogether if they'd like, as they can on PCs today. So your fear really isn't warranted.

Why would you forget $60? If anything I'd expect the prices to fall considerably. The industry is pretty well aware that it cannot break $59.99 and that profits are likely better lower. B&M is part of what is holding it back (but only part.) Have we seen a change on the Xbox?

And why would it mean taking a step back or pausing quality? There are certainly ways to stop that.

Valve is exclusively looking out for its growth here. They are not looking out for consumers. This isn't necessarily bad, but trying to get us to go to a new OS seems very, very stupid.
