Op Ed

GameFront - Why I'm Not Okay with the Penny Arcade Kickstarter.
But Penny Arcade doesn't need money from Kickstarter, or to crowdsource new projects. It simply would prefer to remove ads from its site for one year, at the cost of a huge amount of money. But it’s choosing to gather that money not through usual business channels, but through Kickstarter — and in a way, it’s taking advantage of the Kickstarter culture and drawing away users who would potentially give funds to more needy projects.

It's a fucking kickstarter. If you aren't down with it, DON'T PUT MONEY IN. It's pretty ridiculous to suggest that all kickstarter projects overlap the same pool of potential donators anyway.

No kidding. When I see opinions like this it just baffles the mind.

This mentality that Kickstarter is only supposed to be a last resort for the desperate is just ridiculous. It's perfectly fine for an existing project with ongoing financial needs to switch to Kickstarter funding if they feel that will provide a better experience for their customers/users.

Nevermind the general tone of the article where they seem to think Kickstarter is only for making vidya games. The real "Please turn off your computer and never write an article again." point in the article is this gem:

Other businesses hoping to kick ads from their sites would offer paid subscriptions or ask for donations with that goal in mind.

What the fuck? Subscriptions only benefit the people who subscribe, so that's off the table. No one likes that model. But the real WTF: Kickstarter is essentially the same as asking for donations, but with incentives and a more structured and transparent process.

A Kickstarter is far more beneficial to the users of the site than either of these supposedly superior alternatives.

I don't want random internet pundits telling me what Kickstarter projects I should be able to choose from. The interwebs community at large gets to make that decision. That's the whole point of crowdfunding.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?
