Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar Announced

BioWare unveils Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar, the promised announcement of a new free-to-play game, which turns out will be a new installment in the Ultima series of role-playing games when it is released later this year for Windows and iPads (with cross-platform support). The Ultima Forever Website is online, and is already accepting applications from prospective beta testers. There is an article about this on IGN where Paul Barnett tells them the game will feature Diablo-style combat, and should be available soon, since it is currently in the polishing stage. Here's part of the IGN description of the game, since it is more informative than the announcement:

Ultima Forever is a throwback to classic Ultima games, with mechanics grounded in Ultima IV. Starting as either a fighter or a mage (a druid and paladin class are coming later), your hero sets out on a quest to become the Avatar, a person who embodies what are known as the eight Virtues. Using a Baldur's Gate-like isometric perspective, you'll guide your hero either alone or with friends through hours and hours of quests, battling it out with monsters and making hard choices until your character embodies the virtues and reaches the end-game dungeons. Once you beat it, becoming the Avatar, you then start a new game plus, playing through all the content again on an even harder setting.

It's just a shame that this is another IP ruined by the EA juggernaut.

Ultima VII and VII part 2 were/are great.

Number was 8 was a tragic disappointment, such a shitty shitty game. But when I saw preview screens of Ultima IX Ascension; when it was still isometric; I got hopeful about the series. In the end it was a pain in the ass shit game (less shittier than 8, but still shitty).

I dunno - I thought 7 was the best after 4, but I didn't think 8 and 9 were THAT bad. 8 relied way too much on reflexes, but they patched it up ok (even back then!) and 9 was decent if you got it to run. It was just horribly buggy and slow.

But still if I were to rate them they are clearly the worst of the series. (Well I never played the first 2 to be honest.)

I actually loved U8. I played U6 before it, and yes, it was completely different and not as good, but I still had a ton of fun with it. U8 had amazing atmosphere. But yeah, the mechanics were broken and it wasn't really "ultima".

I even liked U9. Yes, it was EXTREMELY buggy and the controls were shit, but I just liked exploring the world. Great atmosphere too.

U6 was just better tho, and to me that's a true Ultima. I never got around to trying U7, mostly because I hate the graphics.

I think they're actual dumbfucks.

Or maybe pod people.

They sound like pod people.

They say all the words and they think they know what gamers want, but they just don't get it.

I'm unsure how many O's I need to tack onto the N in order to properly express my opinion of this news.

"It plays fast, it's clicky, but the combat's fluid and fun rather than tactical and mind-numbing.

I wonder if these people are actually dumbfucks or just think they're talking to dumbfucks and try to fit in.

And that's basically the problem we've been faced with, is how to reimagine and reboot a classic and make it so that there's a new generation that can have an Ultima."

I'm more astounded by the quote right before that...
"It's like when someone tells you to read Chaucer," Barnett commented. "I know it's supposed to be brilliant, but it's incomprehensible!"

Really?! The Creative Director is slagging someone who may be one of the greatest poets of all time. That says a lot to me on their creative department.

Now that quote is truly a facepalm moment for Bioware, one more amongst the many. What next, William Woodworth made lousy sci-fi stories?

I wonder if the "new generation" ever gets tired of being talked down to by people who are building obvious knock-offs.

In the mean time some people who do get it are having a sale.

Grimrock is on sale at Steam.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/207170/

It's $6 for the next 35 hours.

Anyone who was on the fence about getting Grimrock should get it right now. I mean now now now now!

Oh EA, is there no property or developer you can't ruin?

Already done:

Syndicate - Top-down game...let's make it a FPS!
Wing Commander - First person game...let's make it top-down!

Whats next?

Theme Hospitalville? Come visit my hospital! Water my plants. Sign the patient registry. Spend real money!

Dungeon Keeper themed expansion for The Sims?

Hahaha oh dear, some quotes from an interview with Barnett. I regret the Kotaku link in advance btw, they sound hopeful about the game but well, they suck:

"I could do the quest to kill the giant and go and kill the dragon and kill the necromancer to get the rights to go and have my boat made... or I could give them a buck and just have the boat. And I want a boat, because I want to go and sail around the oceans. I don't want to wait. I want a boat NOW."

"Can we bring BioWare stories to casual space, and can we avoid all the pitfalls that are in the casual space?"

"I mean, I'm aware that Battleship Potemkin defined modern cinema, but it's not a great view. You watch it and go, 'it's black and white and a bit crap, I'd rather watch something else.' And that's basically the problem we've been faced with, is how to reimagine and reboot a classic and make it so that there's a new generation that can have an Ultima."

Literally everything about this game sounds awful to me.

This is indicative of just how far BiowarEA has fallen from grace and the sort of shit that corps like EA think everyone wants instead of real games. Oh well, that just makes it easier for all the indie/KS crowd out there to sell their wares. In fact, they should probably glad that EA continues to shovel crap like this out the door.

"Every generation deserves an Ultima," Barnett declared grandly, "And we're giving this generation the best BioWare Ultima that we can."

Really? This is really the best they can offer? Holy shit. Just wow.

Who is the Barnett clown? He sounds like some 12 year old with ADD.

They're idiots. They should just have called it Ultima Origins, AKA Akalabeth 00, with all the classes of Ultima III (including the Lark) and their races (Fuzzy, anyone?).

That's what I'd call a throwback!

EA destroying another beloved IP. In other news, water is wet.

I figured they ran out of ideas to run the series in to the ground once they hit 9 since they went all out to shit over the game and fans but I guess they need one more go at it!

Double tap...well, more like a quad tap...

WoW pauldrons, 2 classes, Lady British? Really? Out of all the names in Ultima the best thing they could come up with was Lady British? I know Garriot took Lord British with him, but come on.

I heard that there was going to be another Ultima game and I heard that Bioware was involved so I had a tiny shred of hope.

Now I see it's just another EA pile of shit. Worse, it's a mobile EA pile of shit. It moves around - staining everything it touches.

Well, at least it's free to play (which in EA parliance means "Pay to Win"), but it still smells like yet another EA "let's rape another one of our old IPs" move.
