I had the same problem on normal mode. After about 120 turns, I'm feeling all badass with my 900 strength ships (forget what they call it) and killing pirates. Suddenly the AI decides to attack me with its ships in the 3000 range.
I plan on restarting at the easier difficulty, but I've heard that doesn't make much difference. I just have to not suck. As of the moment, I am enjoying Sins: Rebellion more.

Endless Space is more simplified, which means it's more approachable but also lacks depth.
Yeah I played it a while and I came away thinking I should reinstall Galciv and play the real deal.

I think its a 6/8 personally going by the out of eight rankings. Game is good, but it seems so shallow, i think galciv2 ruined me for all other 4x's

It took me about 3 games to figure out the most efficient build, and after that I have owned the AI pretty regularly. The Gamespy review also says the AI is good, and it is, except when it comes to moving ships and choosing weapons, which you notice after 40 hours. The difficulty setting only increases the economic bonus the AI gets, unfortunately.
