Honestly, how did two first person, tactical/military-type series (Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon) evolve into 3rd person shitty Michael Bay action movies?

Because they sell more. A LOT more. You can make something tactical that might sell maybe 300,000 copies, or you go the arcadey route and potentially shift 5 million or more.

I get that it sucks, but I don't get why it's so surprising. We're outnumbered like a thousand to one.

I can remember Rainbow 6 and Original Ghost the way they were meant to be, so each time Ubisoft lurches into the freezer room dragging it's club foot and heaves their corpses out fondling and drooling - it just makes me sick.

If you think this is depressing...you should see a lot of the people who play them. I was in a large clan and the vast majority of the people in it were looking forward to this game. I would ask them about the original Ghost Recon game and they'd all say 'oh, you mean Vegas 1? yeah it was awesome'. Most of them aren't even aware of the original Tom Clancy games, let alone played any of them. Someone actually argued with me that the original Ghost Recon game wasn't first person.

Honestly, how did two first person, tactical/military-type series (Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon) evolve into 3rd person shitty Michael Bay action movies? Both series had really solid single-player and multiplayer. Rogue Spear/Ravenshield and Ghost Recon 1 multiplayer were some of the most fun I've had on PC, and that's not even counting all of the co-op/custom stuff you could do.

Yeah gamers are ultimately responsible for the games we play today. There isn't some magic divide between the moron at the LAN and the developers producing the stuff we play today. Same people. No idea what some of them were playing back in 2000. N64?

When I lanned Ravenshield or OGR there were always 30% of the guys in the room who didn't get it, "too slow", "die too easily". So if we're honest this genre has always had one foot in the grave.

I have no idea what videos you are watching, but they must be shit. Because I’ve been playing the hell out of this game and its kicks ass. Coop is a ton of fun and the game looks great. The game feels like a mix of Vegas and Ghost Recon. I love the tactical element. The ghost stealth just kicks all kinds of ass.
I've watched several videos but this is as good an example as any. Terrible character models, especially the face. Appalling lip-sync. Wooden animations. And all the gameplay criticism stands, as it's just a third-person cover shooter. There is no "tactical element".

For anyone that is into this style of game it's great that Ubisoft is putting the effort in to make the PC version look better. But I'd still like to see them return to the original Rainbow Six, which really did have a lot of tactical elements. Games like Vegas 2 were playable but shallow.

Tried this game and it wasn't for me.

I was hoping it would be more tactical than what it is, you throw a scanning grenade, you see every "enemy" as red, even through walls, then you shoot at them, hide behind cover, run to new cover, shoot some more, then watch cutscene before entering new area.

I would skip this.

Can they at least remove the Tom Clancy tag from the title or do they just like taking a shit all over his name with these CoD/GoW knockoffs.

Ubisoft actually paid Tom Clancy many years back, for permission to continue to use his name as a product brand.

I'm sorry dudes who worked on this (if you're watching the boards) this game looks like it was made for the console teens...

Oh well... here's crossing fingers ARMA gets its shit together... but it won't... so sad for the hardcore crowd...

I guess that's a good thing if you enjoyed the more recent entries in those series? If you didn't (and many fans of the original R6 and GR games did not), Future Soldier looks to be yet another Tom Clancy game that strays further from its realistic and tactical roots.
Indeed. I liked the plodding pace of the original games, it was different.

I thought the graphics were pretty good. It's almost everything else that dissapointed me. The game has a severe case of "consolitis", in my opinion. One of those where each menu is made for an "X" button and such. Even playing isn't smooth with the mouse and keyboard for me. I suppose a patch at some point will address it. Maybe. Ubi's track record for patches hasn't been all that good for me. At least the draconian protection scheme wasn't as invasive.

Although the game supports DX11 it stills looks terrible in all the videos I've seen so far. Further, the game itself is highly derivative and the gameplay looks incredibly dull. So while I'm sure it's better than the respective console versions I still wouldn't consider buying it, even if it was on sale for 85% off.

On the otherhand, Far Cry 3 looks to be very promising. Ubisoft may have shitty business practices but it has a lot of talented developers. I just wish they could nail the final 10% that turns a good game into a great game.

PS - Isn't it time that Ubisoft ditched the Tom Clancy brand? There are so many original concepts left to explore in game design that it's a complete waste to keep rehashing the same shit year after year.

Maybe KindacrappyDRMsoft?

I just think they mostly make shovelware. a.k.a. crap not even worth pirating. Which does make their DRM schemes all the more hilarious and obscene.

It's not my internet connection I'm worried about, it's theirs. I won't accept being locked out of a single player game because a publisher's connection is swamped, or even worse, because they've switched off their machine after a couple of years. Unless a central hub is an essential part of the experience (e.g. an MMO), I'm not prepared to buy a game and then only play when the publisher is willing and able to let me.

As a PC gamer I should hate Ubisoft pretty much without exception. But I could careless about DRM. I'm not a pirate, my internet connection never goes out, and I like quite a few Ubisoft titles. On the other hand, I do have to defend the fact that always on DRM stinks for some.
I normally don't care, except when it comes to limited activations and mandatory online connections. In theory there is nothing wrong with limited activations - especially when hardware checks are done instead of software - but in practice I've been locked out of numerous games now, including STALKER: Clear Sky and Crysis 2. So yes, people are right to kick up shit for that. DRM doesn't work, so it shouldn't be used.
