Bethesda Still Wants RAGE to be All the Rage

Though there has been no talk of follow-ups to RAGE since the release of id Software's first-person shooter, Bethesda's Pete Hines tells Eurogamer that it's "certainly our hope and certainly our intent" that this becomes a big franchise. "We're looking at doing some things with Rage. But obviously the first thing out of anybody's lips now when we talk about id is not, hey, what else is up with Rage? They're asking the question they've been asking for five years, six years, seven years, which is, where's Doom 4? What about Doom 4?," he explains. "As far as where we are with Rage, the future for that is still TBD." Along the way he addresses other recent rumors to some extent or another, saying DOOM 4 is still in development, and that he can't say whether Human Head has been removed as developer for Prey 2.

That's like saying Unreal looks the best of all, ID engine is not the name of any engine, it's called "id Tech" engine, Tech 4 is a solid and when it was revealed absolutely revolutionary engine (agreed, and if heavily modified and havok/PhysX are used to replace the crappy Tech 4 physics API, can rival anything available today because it can use modern GPU features up to the maximum current standards) including GI, HDR, Color Mapping, Ambient Occlusion and reflections and you can forgo that crap megatexture as well. Tech 4 with a major modification could still rival most engines available today (Frosbite 2 and CryEngine 3 excluded) but at least UE3 would be matchable.

But that was the past. Tech 4 was awesome, Tech 5 is like trying to win World War Z with a club made of cotton. I would even go so far and bet that NOBODY will ever use Tech 5 for anything, apart from ID who can't use anything else ;p

And while effects are overrated, when everything is blurry grainy crap in front of you then no amount of good gameplay is gonna make it a good game. When I first entered the major office in the first town in Rage i was completely blown away, pixels everywhere. The Major model looked great (obviously didn't use Virtual Texture) and so did the buggy. But the world in comparison was like someone smudged vasline over everything

And then I entered the dead city and saw skyscrapers whose texture did not even consist of more then 4 pixels in certain places, and I am not even making this shit up. 4 Pixels! blurry, badly graded pixels. And most other textures (mostly everything in the dark) even had banding artifacts. Like they used a really low quality jpg compression setting.

Anybody telling me this is the future has absolutely NO CLUE about graphics or why tile based textures are absolutely superior in all ways. Except, and that is the 1 exception, for landscapes in the distance or terrain features that are highly unique. But for everything else, Virtual Texture is a nightmare.
