I could have sworn they said this would have an offline functionality mode right after the big unveiling when fans were upset. Anyone know what happened to that? I'm assuming the answer is EA.

This sucks hate having a day off to play D3 only to find out the servers will be down for maintenance, pisses me off.
This trend is the 2nd worst thing that's ever happened to gaming. #1 being when they stopped letting you take a shitty game back for a refund.

Don't worry, with every purchase of D3, including those made after the release date, it has helped push this as the future of gaming. D3 has sold amazing amounts of units, millions, and the hard numbers tell publishers one thing. The customer like this. No, they love this. And its a publishers wet dream come true. Always online DRM that the customer loves so much they have pushed it to be the biggest selling PC game in history, even after it was found out for all the negatives involved.

Welcome to the future of gaming.

That said, the game is designed to be played in that persistent, multiplayer world, so players won't be able to gleefully destroy a city and then go back to an earlier save file as if nothing ever happened, for instance.

This is going to be the one to bomb... SimCity, though a popularly known brand name, does not have the kind of fanboys Blizzard has. The dearth of games in the city building genre has stopped any new fans from joining and the existing ones I like to think are not going to stand for this. Have yet to see a positive comment from anyone aware of this new "feature".

That quote really sucks for many reasons. Gleefully destroying a city is a good thing and so is reloading a save if you want to. People should be able to choose how they want to play, not be limited by some set of arbitrary rules to protect the Real Money Sims Auction House. Unbelievable, what a bunch of morons.

The hilarious thing is that this goes pretty much opposite to their comments that there will be MOD support. Because there is no way that's gonna work with always online and social crap.

If there is a proper offline mode I am gonna be pretty much satisfied and not care about the rest. But as Ubisoft taught me with Anno2070 just because a game starts out with a good Offline mode, doesn't mean it keeps that mode (recent patches pretty much ruined the offline mode completely, as NO dlc, no ARC and 50% of the gameplay features do not actually WORK in offline mode (research/arc modules).

Man, Anno2070 is one of these games I hugely regret buying.

Wow. EA, is there no franchise or IP you don't fucking destroy?

Even the graphics of this SimCity scream casual at me. Glad I have SC4 but damn, I was hoping SC5 would be as brilliant if not more, this series does not deserve this ignoble treatment.

In this case paying customers get shafted anyway, Sim City with forced online play is like a Civilization where you have to play with 2 other human players. It is completely retarded because the entire POINT of Sim City was the challenge building a huge city posed WITHOUT a safety net of other player cities to rely on.

This Sim City is everything I do not want in a eco sim. random people and always online.

Nice to see they went back on saying there would be offline functionality. This is like Diablo 3 all over again, where is the value provided by the online requirement? All we get are ongoing issues and no tangible benefit from it. What if I don't want to interact with neighboring cities that have real players at the helm? Tough shit, buy a different game? Fine if that's what it takes. These companies need to find a middle ground, this is just getting fucking stupid. I don't want multiplayer shoehorned into every piece of gaming content.

Goddamn assholes.

Hopefully this game will be terrible in ways other than persistent online connection requirement so I don't have to torture myself.

...but said that if it becomes a problem they could briefly allow people to play offline while things get fixed.

That sounds pretty hackable to me so yet again pirates get rewarded and paying customers shafted.
