No, I wasn't thinking of of shacknews or any other sites. This was one of the last bastions of video gaming a few years ago. I think some held on and others just like casual gaming. Nice to see that the Console section hasn't grown even if the posters have.

I really wanted to give the DayZ mod a shot, but too many games at the moment.

BTW: I think I read that the whole zombies (AI) running through walls is a limitation of the game engine and can't be fixed. Is that true?

If the engine detects that the AI is stuck against an object or otherwise it might allow the AI to pass through nearby objects briefly just to get them unstuck. It doesn't always happen but if you see it, that's why.

It could also just be lag\de sync, if you're getting hit and the enemy isn't close by.

Clipping generally has been a longstanding "quirk" of the engine.

I'm pretty sure it's just lag. Games use navmeshes to define where AI can and cannot go, so unless the navmesh was created incorrectly and is clipping into walls and such, AI should run around things instead of through them. Also, the physics should prevent actors from passing through any collision.

That's actually one of my biggest problems with the mod as it stands now - you can only have one character. I've been playing with a friend, so we usually log off in the same spot so we can start up again later. But that means I can't play with any other groups, unless I want to constantly (try and) travel back and forth between group locations - which would be a major pain in the ass.

Give it a go, make it for us. If its even half as good as day z looks, I'd play it.

DayZ sounds like a load of fun, and it pretty much seems to mirror how I imagine the inevitable zombie apocalypse will go: me running around killing the undead while avoiding the living because they're just a bunch of back-stabbing assholes who will shoot you in the back and take your stuff.

BTW: I think I read that the whole zombies (AI) running through walls is a limitation of the game engine and can't be fixed. Is that true?

Last night I cleared out a larger building of zombies. In the process, some from outside ran to the side of the building and were able to hit me while I was standing against the wall. They didn't walk through the wall, but they definitely could swing through it. I took a step forward and they stopped hitting me. However, they were not smart enough to find the door.

Don't get me wrong, DayZ is buggy and not intuitive to use. It's still alpha, and since I've never played ArmaII, I don't know what is buggy due to the mod and buggy due to the game. The backpack inventory system is pure shit to use. Mobs (and animals you can find for food) can get stuck in the ground. Moving the mouse feels weird. Turning up gamma and brightness at night so you can see doesn't help much (but does make you feel like you're on drugs).

Even with the issues, I found it to have a lot of immersion. Running around the mountains at night with a pistol low on ammo and not being able to see shit was really fun. Especially since it throws in random sounds. I really want to find some other non-bandit players though so I can experience the team aspect of it.

Worth $30? Dunno yet. Worth a Steam sale of $10? Definitely.

The ArmA map is 225 square kilometers. It might not be Frostbite 2 pretty or feature the same destruction, but at that size it's understandable why they might trade detail.

I haven't really done any research on the game, do you have to collect food, make shelter and whatnot? It sounds interesting but Diablo 3 is pretty close.

You have to find food/water/ammo. You don't really need shelter. Most of the buildings you do find either have zombies in them or you just can't enter them (no opening door). That's a very annoying thing about it. You can come across a small town, but only 1 or 2 buildings have a door. I hope that's just due to having to place all the buildings (that is, a time constraint) and not an engine constraint.

I think some groups have taken over some of the locations in the game to create a safe area. Dunno how that works though since the only human I've found shot me in the head.

hehehe looking forward to it. I will be on here and there. Tonight for sure, then off and on as the D3 servers go off and on.

And EA would have surely allowed that, right? They are so open to modding. The company that said the engine was too complex and the modders too dumb to use it, so they weren't going to bother with tools.
