The reason I bought a TV is because my old one (a fairly high quality 23" Samsung, cost about £450 a few years ago) fell off the wall. Scared the hell out of me too, I was lucky that it didn't hit me.
That Samsung was a traditional back-light LCD screen. It was uniform, but not particularly black. The new one is LED, but it's not one LED per pixel - just rows of LEDs down each side, reflected across the screen. It's thinner and more energy efficient than back-lit, but of lower image quality. There's also per-pixel LED displays, which are basically OLED but in 2 parts, apparently they look quite good.
