The coop would only work if both players were handicapped through some clever gameplay mechanic. Working together should be a requirement for success. Gamers would then bitch about said handicap and prove their lack of imagination so I doubt the dev will chance it.

Coop is really dependent on the sort of people you play with. In my LAN days we'd coop AVP 1. Only 20% of the my friends were capable of playing "in character" and making the coop fun. Most would surge ahead on their own and drop any semblance of coop play. I can only imagine how shit coop must be today with random kids on consoles coop'ing across continents chasing achievements rocking back and forth high on energy drinks.

The MP in Dead Space 2 was tacked on and terrible. At launch there were about 2 servers active with a total of 8 players world wide. At least on PC.

It's only scary if you play it in the dark, alone and on the hardest difficulty where you actually have to run from certain fights and can't just destroy everything before it gets near you. I found the first one far more terrifying, but that is because I did what I stated above. The second one I played with my fiance on the couch next to me on the easiest difficulty because she was getting bored of watching me die and just wanted to see the story. So that most likely detracted from the "scary" element.

That being said, I find the concept of Co-Op detracting from the "horror" part. Instead of making it Co-Op, they should of allowed people to drop into your game and place as infected, like L4D Versus. Would make for more interesting game play and a better challenge for those that wanted it. Although I suppose the majority of people would just toggle it off to prevent being owned by other players.

Wasn't there another game that did something similar though? Dark Souls for the PS3 or something?

Agreed that co-op just doesn't work for horror. If they'd gone for a sort of spin-off where you play as a squad of space marines wading through thousands of necromorphs, though, I could easily see myself playing it for a bit with friends. If they absolutely have to add multiplayer, then I'd rather have that than the usual poorly balanced hastily slapped together boring death match related stuff that nobody plays after the first month. And I'd rather have campaign drop-in as well, even though it completely removes the tension, atmosphere and brilliant sound-design that made the first two games good. That's just going to evaporate when you have your friends cracking jokes on voice chat at the same time.

Doubt I'll be grabbing it at all though. I was getting pretty tired of the whole game towards the mid/end of the second installment, and there wasn't exactly much in the way of plot to keep things interesting either.

Definitely at least check out the first one, it's quite a solid game. I thought the first Dead Space was a better "horror" game, they really ratchet up the tension and you find yourself doing doubletakes on your surroundings quite often. The second game was undoubtedly a better shooter but I didn't like the addition of a voiced protagonist and the story stuff gets a bit retarded. Neither game is particularly well paced either, lots of filler sections to pad out the length.

I suggest waiting and playing the first one. There are some minor bits in the second game that play off of the first, and the gameplay's a little smoother and more varied in the second game as well (matter of opinion, I expect).

play the first one, but when the middle bit gets boring, power through it, it will make the second one a lot better.

How is it 90% shooter if you're easily overwhelmed if you're not careful. The character plods about slowly enough that if you're not on your guard at all times you're dead. Both titles had loads of quiet areas that build tension.

It's 90% shooter because you shoot (and kill) anything that attacks you. The only time you ever have to run away is when you're facing the one invincible enemy that is in both games. For everything else, you just whip out your plasma cutter and slice them to pieces. And I played both games on Hard.

Creepy atmosphere alone does not make for survival-horror. Survival-horror means you have to avoid combat whenever possible and running/hiding is the most effective tactic in most situations.

They should make it so that when you play co-op, Isaac thinks that the other player is just a hallucination - but both players will think that the other guy is the halllucination.
Then after completing the campaign in co-op together, the players should have to fight each other - so that they can rid them selves of the hallucination. The player that wins the fight becomes the true Isaac - or does he? muahaha

Since both players will think that the other is the hallucination, you could have some very entertaining dialogue between the two Isaacs throughout the game - as they start to realise one of them is just a figment of the others imagination, and later they begin to argue who is the real one - leading up to their mind battle in the end.
