Legend of Grimrock Patched

The Legend of Grimrock Website announces the release of a new patch to update Almost Human's dungeon crawler to version 1.1.4. The patch is save-game compatible with previous versions, and here's how it is being distributed: "We have pushed the patch to Steam, GOG and our own store and it should be available once the distributors have done their magic, hopefully within 24 hours. Steam users will get the patch automatically, and if you bought the game from GOG or from us you can download the patched version of the game using the same way you obtained the original copy. But hold on a bit, it will take some time before the build gets updated on the servers." Here's the change list:

  • vsync is enabled by default
  • borderless windows are no longer topmost
  • pressing ESC closes character sheet
  • fixed unlimited frost arrow exploit
  • improved display resolution auto-detection at first launch
  • fixed a couple of typos and broken english
  • removed check that disables high texture resolution setting when running low on video memory (some graphics drivers seem to report available video memory incorrectly)
  • quick save/load
  • volume sliders
  • to avoid confusion autosave & quicksave slots can’t be renamed anymore
  • adjusted gui layout and camera fov so that user interface elements do not overlap with important screen areas on non-widescreen displays
  • invert horizontal mouse option
  • camera bobbing option (only available by editing the config file manually)
  • configurable tooltip delay (only available by editing the config file manually)
  • frame rate limiter (set to 120fps but can be changed by editing the config file)
  • custom character portraits
  • bug fix: very long map marker notes without spaces in them causes the automap to crash
  • bug fix: editing a map marker that is on the same exact spot as a marker on the other map page edits them both at the same time
  • bug fix: map labels are sometimes drawn partially underneath map symbols
  • bug fix: topmost menu item doesn’t work reliably in high resolutions such as 2560×1440
  • bug fix: wall text translations are not dismissed when right-clicking
  • bug fix: inanimate objects can be backstabbed
  • bug fix: projectiles go through doors in some very rare cases
  • bug fix: saving the game crashes if all save game slots are full and the autosave slot is deleted or unused
  • bug fix: Fighter’s Challenge doesn’t open if there’s an item in front of the door (only applies to new games, existing save games still have this bug)
  • bug fix: saving the game just after the end fight creates a corrupted save that can lead to crashes and the end sequence not getting triggered correctly
  • bug fix: auto pickup doesn’t pick up the correct amount of ammo in some rare circumstances
  • bug fix: standing on stairs and turning with the mouse, followed by a turn using q/e keys is buggy
  • bug fix: when a monster is damaged, experience point text sometimes (very rarely) flash in a square where a monster has been killed
  • bug fix: trying to load a save game that has just been deleted manually from the file system (e.g. in Windows explorer) crashes the game

invert horizontal mouse option

Ok, I gotta ask. And this is coming from someone who always reverses mouselook (aka vert)...

Maybe their mental frame of reference is 3rd person, so pulling the interface left moves the focus right? Like controlling a studio camera.

I used to know someone who used a mouse rotated 180°, even in Windows.

I can't believe how hooked I am on this game. These guys hit the mark very well with this game; a perfect balance of oldschool and modern implementations. The puzzles are good fun, some a good challenge. I'm having a lot of fun with this game......

Like how when OS X Lion came out, and it switched everyone's scroll functionality to the opposite, because now you're 'pushing the page up', instead of 'scrolling your view down'...

Also, I've seen hundreds of games over the years with horizontal invert right under vertical invert... It's like those weird left-handed people...

I agree.. I'm totally digging this game. Taking my time getting through it.. I just started level 6 last night.

With regards to the patch, what does "borderless windows are no longer topmost" mean?

I kinda liked not having a quicksave crutch. Needing to stop playing and go into the menu to save has forced me to be a little more alert and play smarter, because I find that I don't save as often as I probably would if I had a quicksave button.

HUH! You should have come across a bow already. I'm not sure what gives.....I'm trying to remember where I picked mine up.

HAH! I'm in level 6 as well - about 1/2 way through so far (estimating).

Yeah, in regards to the "borderless windows are no longer topmost", I was wondering the same thing.

I agree that the 'quicksave/quickload' can be a crutch, but definitely handy on some of those platform puzzles or an enemy that kicks your asses.

Happy crawling.....

I'm on level 5 and I've found 2 bows and a crossbow. I think the 2nd bow I found was on level 5 though, and I think the crossbow was in a secret area.

CRAP! How did I miss that crossbow? I've been scouring those levels too; however, I did find the BFG towards the end of level 5 though. ;-) JK

If you run the game in borderless windowed mode, when you alt-tab to a different window, Grimrock is always still on top, meaning you can't see the active window hiding behind it. Kinda defeats the purpose of having windowed mode.

This should fix that.

Short Bow is found in the very first room on level three. You literally can not miss it, it has a torch right next it (it's in a barred room accessed by some loose rocks).

There's also a sling (uses rocks) on floor 2.

By the way, the end of this game really sucks. The last few floors are just kind of thrown on, and the boss fight (yeah it ends with a boss fight) is stupendously bad.

Damn, I didn't find the sling. I'd go back up and get it, but I really don't need it now though, I've got about a dozen throwing starts and knives, and one of my rogues can attack with daggers from the back row now. I kind of wish they'd randomize the weapons and/or locations they appear. I know the old school RPGs didn't do that, but it would make things different if you play it again since once you know what items are where, you can plan your party to take advantage what you come across.

BTW, has the patch gone out on Steam yet? Mine didn't patch when I started it. Steam updated and I restarted Steam, but still no patch to Grimrock.

I checked the same thing: Steam updated, but LoG didn't. If I understand correctly, they pushed the patch to Steam, it may be up to 24hrs until Steam approves and releases it for automatic updating.

Updated fine here, sometimes it just takes the Steam CDNs a bit of time to propogate files.

Yeah, drove me nuts. This game should need the mouse as little as possible.

Good fix.
