Analyst: Blame CoD Decline on PC/Wii

Following up on a recent report that suggests sales of Call of Duty; Modern Warfare 3 are trailing behind those of Call of Duty: Black Ops, Gamasutra has a statement from an analyst blaming this on the game's afterthought platforms, the PC and Wii (thanks Joao). Word is: "Cowen's Doug Creutz said in his latest report that while life-to-date Modern Warfare 3 retail sales are indeed down 4.6 percent year-over-year compared to Black Ops, sales of the game on the Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms are actually slightly up year-over-year. However, large declines in sales of the versions of the game for Nintendo Wii, handheld platforms and PC have driven the overall decline, he suggests."

Did they make a MW3 for the Wii? At best, I guess they could have made a different game, and called it MW3 and put it out on the Wii, but it wouldn't have been the same game as the PC/PS3/XBox. So how exactly is the Wii getting the blame for poor MW3 sales?

PC retail sales...

What PC retail sales? Holy shit this guy is a disgrace to my profession, he didn't really study anything about what he's talking about, he's just trying to reassure investors that all is ok. Holy fuck, PC retail sales is non-existant to begin with. What a sad case of not doing any homework at all.

A poorly ported console game that's really nothing more than an overpriced expansion and theey wonder why sales aren't as good on the PC? Seriously?

This may be part of the point, ASeven. NPD only measures retail sales. So this is all analysts have to work with, as they can't properly measure Steam sales.
So PC sales are down, which is in part due to PC retail sales as a whole being down.

But, again fitting the "we're both wrong" theory, the 360 and PS3 seem to be stronger than ever.

You won't admit that, though. Nope, you still see every tiny thing as being manipulated into your own little theory. Hell, now you're claiming to be an equity analyst.

Shame that if the 360 and PS3 is stronger than the decline is far more serious then. Then again you had to take a chance to throw more apologist crap. Not surprised. Hell, go read the articles on gamasutra that do show people are worried this is a decline and not a cycle. Oh but you won't because it would show you are pretty wrong.

And the point is, there is no PC retail sales anymore, they no longer have any relevancy to whatever numbers NPD throws. PC sales have long become digital, retail is only a tiny fraction of PC gaming sales overall.

Oh and I worked as an equity analyst. Try not to make assumptions about my life, ok?

So apparently not only do the console monkeys happily keep buying the same fucking game over and over again, but they convince more of their friends to do so as well.

And we wonder why the game industry has totally gone to shit. It's because that is the largest client base...

Wait a minute the obvious question. I thought PC sales didn't exist, there wasn't a measurable pc market, companies don't make money on PC version, hence the bottom shouldn't be adjusted no matter how the PC version does? Hypocrisy at it's finest, next follow up will be
"the Piracy" is hurting sales? Analyst make up your mind, PC versions doesn't helps sells, piracy hurts sells, non-selling pc version hurts sells which is it?

The CODs are frequent visitors to the Steam top 10.

I have them all on PC and enjoy them - I am just not into the multiplayer side - or a fanatic at least. So many other great games and so little spare time.

Personally if Activision keep charging AUD$99.00 for a game that has been out for ages reeks of greed [how long since MW3 was released?].

And with games like Skyrim with FREE mods and worthy others like Kingdoms of Amalur, the recently updated Witcher 2. Sheesh!

I heard a developer posted today (somewhere here on Blues I think) that people by the Wii for the Sports and Fit games. That's it! No market for anything else on it. Sad but true.

I actually liked MW2 accept for the lack of server support, BlOps ruined all the fun of unlocking weapons and attachments... But I still bought it for PC.

The reason I never even considered MW3 is all the DLC that was planned to come out... $60 bucks is enough, if you expect me to drop another $100+ for a few maps but the same gameplay your crazy!

And I get it, "you don't need to buy all the DLC". But if you don't you are fragmented from the larger community, and it may be a unnoticeable dent in their profits, but I refuse to support a company with that mind set.

Companies used to make games to make money but also to create a great game that will be remembered and cherished. Now its "How little can we give them and still justify the price, We need to save our ideas for next year" and it sickens me.

Didn't MW2 and BLOPS have tons of DLC too?

Pretty sure of it. I think I have 6.5 days in MW3 multiplayer right now. No plans to buy any DLC - don't need new maps. I'm getting better every day and my K:D ratio is rising rapidly. If I only game for about 30 minutes it's much easier to do 3 rounds of this than half of a Skyrim mission, or start something entirely new, so I just keep falling back to it. I really expected about 18 hours out of multiplayer, but mowing people down is oddly satisfying.

Yeah, there's mild fragmentation, but those buying the DLC tend to be the most committed and best players. Weeding them out via DLC just means it's even easier to mop the floor with the remains.
