Grim Dawn Kickstarter

A new Kickstarter campaign by Crate Entertainment looks to fund the competition of development of Grim Dawn, their upcoming action/RPG (thanks nin and Grudgebearer). It was just a couple of weeks ago that they described plans to release the game as a work-in-progress like Minecraft, but now they are turning to crowd funding to turn up the heat, saying: "While we could still finish a fine little game on our own, that would be rough around the edges but very fun, we believe there is a much greater potential that could be realized if we were more adequately funded and staffed. So we're hoping you can help give us some proper funding so that we can get the team together, start making faster progress and ultimately release a bigger, better game for you and everyone else." Here's word on the game:
Grim Dawn is an action role-playing game for PC and a spiritual successor to Titan Quest. For the past two years a small team of former Iron Lore veterans at Crate Entertainment have been developing Grim Dawn with their own, improved version of the Iron Lore engine and tools; the same technology used to create Titan Quest.

We’ve listened to years of feedback from the Titan Quest community and continue to do so every day on the Grim Dawn forums as we strive to improve upon past performance and make this our greatest work yet. The creation of Grim Dawn is guided by traditional design and old school sensibilities, with innovation only in the areas where we feel it truly improves the game and isn't just a gimmicky back of the box feature.

Notice that 1% of the funding comes from bluesnews links (and that's only counting ones that funded after clicking on the link).

Neat! I looked but didn't see Blue's for Double Fine's.

agree with you regarding most devs.

what could this guy do though? he did not have the rights to titan quest. he couldn't very well continue working on it. what he later scrapped together to buy was the game engine and tools, not 'Titan Quest'. his time alone was working on an engine and toolset he was already familiar with.

I'd like to think most dropped devs would love to work on their forced buggy releases if they could do so without getting sued.

The lack of post release support, especially after Immortal Throne was released, is all THQ's doing and not Iron Lore (now Crate). They've made several posts about that on the TQ fan forums that are about four or five years old now, I believe, and are gathering dust. I think they were even linked here at some point, if memory serves.

Regardless, I contributed to them years ago already.

Yeah, I don't care. At some point, devs have to stop hiding behind the convenient "The publisher didn't pay us for another patch!" bullshit, and FIX the product they delivered. The rubber-banding bug broke both the expansion and the original game across a massive variety of hardware.

It should have been fixed.

Arthur Bruno seems capable of working on a new game for two years out of his own pocket, but he couldn't find the time to fix that bug that (badly) broke his previous game?

The more we let devs get away with this kind of horseshit, the more they'll do it. Eventually they'll just stop patching anything.

Ummmm fucking no, if a developer puts out a bad product they are responsible for making it right. I don't give a fuck if THQ closed them down, shut the doors, turned off the lights, it's your fucking duty to fix the shit you had everybody buying. There were HUGE issues with both TQ and IT, gaping shit (like skills that flat-out didn't work, game-breaking environment bugs) that was never addressed because those cocksuckers decided to simply write the game off as a loss rather than make right by the customers. The only reason I could finish the game was because of fan patchwork. You want to fucking tell me that a bunch of random gamers are more capable of patching a game than the people that fucking made it???

Uh, doesn't that mean they ran out of money? How is that good news.

This will be the one and only game I fund on kickstarter, if there is a paypal way.

This is like the LSL KS, in that I'm a little hesitant when they (seemingly) had funding before, but once KS got popular, here they are.

I've not read everything about the KS, maybe they hope to employ more people and get it done sooner?

It seems they have two guys working on it full-time who are basically not drawing ANY money whatsoever, and then they have a few guys who work at other studios during the day, then spend their spare time working on Grim Dawn.

They also say they WILL get the game finished without additional funding, but if they get what they're asking for, they can hire some of those part-time guys to come work full-time, so they'd be able to get it done faster, and create more content.

They're already talking about what they'll do if they get five or ten times what they ask for, so they do apparently have dollar signs in their eyes... but it seems pretty reasonable what they're asking for and if you're excited about this (type of) game, giving them some cash so they can add more content, and allow you to get it for 18 bucks seems like a pretty smart deal.

I just still have a really, really sour taste in my mouth over what they did with Titan Quest and its expansion, and the fucking "Make the game virtually unplayable" bug they left in it. So I'm still debating on whether to give these guys any money. I have a nasty suspicion that Grim Dawn will see the exact same level of after-release support as the TQ expansion did (read: ZERO.)

Yeah, Tit Quest itself wasn't very good though I liked the setting.

That does it! From now on, any references should be addressed as "Tit Quest"!

TQ was terrible -- boring and repetitive to the extreme. Crappy skill trees, boring items, endless hours of the same style map and enemies. I hope these guys learned something from that experience. Seems unlikely.

The game was LONG, true, but I fail to see how that's a bad thing. It's not their fault you couldn't suppress your ADD long enough to get to see the three other, completely different locations. Though I will admit the loot didn't get really interesting until starting the higher-level replay-throughs.

Yeah, Tit Quest itself wasn't very good though I liked the setting. Immortal Throne was vastly improved however. This game doesn't look very good, but again I like the setting. Guess we'll have to wait for the expansion before it gets good. LOL!

I suggest reading the entire kickstarter page. It sheds light on why they're doing this, and a lot of other things too. They could have still completed the game, but they want to make it bigger and better, faster. The kickstart will allow them to do that.

Yeah, I was at work earlier, but after watching the video at home, they explain it. Basically, they want to go from a staff of 2 and some part time folks, to adding additional full time people that will allow the game to be better, and done faster.

I'll probably go $35 on this one...

They're just trying to get a piece of the Kickstarter pie before the bubble bursts, like everyone else who jumped on the bandwagon after Tim Schafer. The crash is going to be spectacular.

Why not? If I was them, I'd jump on Kickstarter to.

Hrm, this may be the first Kickstarter I actually contribute to... I am really looking forward to Grim Dawn. I definitely want to speed up their publicly announced timeline of sometime mid to late 2013.. for the BETA, lol.

That said, people in this thread are angry that there is no Paypal support?!? Last time I checked, Paypal is still the semi-bank without regulation who refuses to give people their funds for no apparent reason whatsoever... why do people like them again? It's not like there are no good alternatives, either. Amazon payments, Moneybookers, google, etc.

I really want another Titan Quest. For all of its problems I still spent at least a hundred hours playing it. If throwing more money at these guys will improve the odds of this happening, then I will.

As far as them fixing bugs in TQ? I expect no support from any game company that I don't pay a monthly bill to.
