Microsoft Not Dropping GFWL

Since Microsoft plans to include Xbox LIVE functionality in Windows 8, Neogamr approached them asking if this meant a possible end to the Games for Windows LIVE service, since there is some obvious overlap between the two. The reply was no, offering the perspective that Age of Empires Online and "Microsoft Flight" are targeted at "the core PC gamer." Here's word:
Answer is no, Microsoft continues to support the Games for Windows platform, but we are making new investments in Metro style games. For the core PC gamer we launched “Age of Empires Online” last year and “Microsoft Flight” on February 29.

When it comes to the living room, Xbox 360 was the number one selling connected TV device in 2011 and we have 40 million Xbox LIVE members. We are committed to delivering extraordinary entertainment experiences across devices in a uniquely connected way. Xbox LIVE on Windows 8 is a milestone in that journey. With the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, you’ll get a taste of some of the features we’re bringing with Xbox on Windows, but we’ll have more to share later this year as we get closer to launch.

You would think the largest OS developer on the planet would get it right and get a clue from all the negativity from gamers

It would be small matter for a company with Microsoft's resources IF they actually gave a damn about PC gaming and the PC market. Alas, they don't.

They do care. They want it to die, so that everyone can be on their wonderful xbox.

This isn't at all true. They're not dumb enough to think everyone has the means to the Xbox, but everyone has a PC with Windows.

But they don't put many resources into PC gaming. Do you blame them, really? They put their entertainment resources into the Xbox and into their Phone department. It's a clear business model - they make money on the hardware and the software. Where do they make money on PC gaming? They don't make it on the hardware. And software? People either use Windows or they do not - games are no longer a clear determining factor there. If Microsoft makes gaming better for Ubisoft and Ubisoft sells more PC games where does Microsoft see a return on that time and capital?

The GFWL team is absolutely committed and loves PC gaming, they just don't have the resources to do much with it. As a result the software more or less sucks.
But let's not sit here and act like it's personal or like someone is in a board room going "Step 1: Screw PC gamers." It's just that it's pretty impossible to create a convincing business plan for Microsoft in PC gaming. WP8 will change that by making Windows an ecosystem with an app store.
That likely will mean nothing to us as hardcore gamers that will never touch the Metro side of the OS.
