Every thing you've mentioned as not being available online is available on DVD and BluRay eventually. Eventually is too long. [grin] |

I cut my cable TV 2 year agos. Any major sports event with a local team that I would care to see is available on free TV.
How I obtain my 10 shows listed in the TV thread:
Lost -Hulu Breaking Bad Boardwalk Empire -Mostly at a friend's house Game of Thrones -Mostly at a friend's house The Daily Show -Hulu but removed for a short period, but was still avail at CC Always Sunny -Used to be on Hulu, I stopped watching after they took it off Community -Hulu Louie -Hulu Wilfred -Hulu Battlestar Galactica -Hulu Arrested Development -Hulu
Guess which shows don't have me in their viewers stats or watching their ads? They don't even need to be on Hulu or anything, just give me a place to watch them legitimately with little buffering and reasonable quality. |

The only downside is that Cable companies, being run by complete idiots who get themselves tied up in moronic, backward, and regressive contracts, do everything in their power to go against this trend. Preach on, Brother Prez! They leave the money on the table, and then wonder why potential customers go torrent...

I rid myself of cable/satellite years ago and have not regretted it once. Any new TV shows worth watching like "Touch" or "Alcatraz" (well, it's worth watching to me) I can watch on Hulu or Amazon 'Video On Demand'. If you are patient, shows like "Walking Dead" and "Breaking Bad" get the latest seasons on Netflix once the season is over. If not, you can buy the episodes a day after they air on Amazon. With the right device (Wi-fi ready TV or Blu Ray player, or my favorite, a Roku box) any of this can be watched on your TV in HD.
The only downside is that Cable companies, being run by complete idiots who get themselves tied up in moronic, backward, and regressive contracts, do everything in their power to go against this trend. The Playon TV server goes a long way in fighting this, but if the retards running the cable companies (into the ground mostly) would get on board instead of opposing it every step of the way it would be so much better.

I hate commercials almost as much as I hate watching something just "because it's on" which seems to be the way most TV is consumed. Haven't missed it. I also hate commercials and hate watching something because it's on. Therefore I DVR everything I'm going to watch and start it 20 minutes in if it's a watch-now show or just watch it on the weekend when I have time for anything else. And the only time I turn the TV on "just because" is if I'm eating dinner alone, in which case I'll watch half of an Adventure Time or something.
So the problem sounds less like it was due to cable and more due to yourself.
I have not cut the cord. I see no reason to. Yes, the money sucks, and yes, I watch about 7 hours a week (if that), but it's worthwhile to me. I enjoy keeping current on Breaking Bad, Justified, and a few HBO/Showtime shows. I cannot do that without paying for cable. The luxury of being able to see those shows within a few days of them airing and participate in the conversation about them makes cable worthwhile to me. Do I ever watch movies on HBO? No. But the 40 or so hours a year I watch it are worth the cash to me.
I'd consider cutting the cord eventually, but being able to participate in dialogue about how insanely terrible The Walking Dead is every Monday morning during the season outweighs the benefits of not dealing with cable. |

And the sooner more people cut the cord, the better. Yes. Because the courts ruled against dry-dsl a few years ago(10ish? 12ish). And it allowed companies to do away with selling only dry for a specific service. It'll prolly go back to court though. |

I have not had cable for a few years now, until 3 weeks ago and I moved and it was $20 a month cheaper from Comcast to get cable and internet then just cable.....Even after the introductory price period.
I did not actually hook up the cable.

Agree Cutter. I suppose cellphone companies making folks get a "data plan" with a smartphone is somewhat analogous since wifi is an alternative. And Verizon and others got away with that. |

Cut the cord back in 2003 when I realized I was paying $125/mo to watch just 2 shows: Whose Line is It Anyway? and Insomniac with Dave Attell. Never looked back. |

Mine went last month after half an hour to my satalite company persuading them I really wasn't going to answer any of their questions. 99% of what we watch is on free to air channels and the 1% can be caught online somehow. Movies, sport and the 3d channel weren't worth £62.50 (98 USD) a month.
Oh and there's enough complete series on netflix to keep me happy for years (i.e. I've never seen an episode of 24 but it's all on there). |

1 Million Pay TV Users Cut Cord in 2011. Indeed, I fully cut the cord last year officially. Saving about $150 a month, my setup is now fully automated and commercial free. Sports was the hardest thing to replace but you can do it through a combination of sports bars and streaming sites. |
