Blizzard: Some WoW Subs Lost to The Old Republic

An interview on Eurogamer.net talks with World of Warcraft producer John Lagrave about the state of the game. He discusses the subscriber numbers for the MMORPG, saying that they have lost some players to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, though they think there are others hibernating until the release of the next WoW expansion:
"We certainly do look at [where WOW players go], and we have a very smart bunch of guys who do our analytics for us," said senior World of Warcraft producer John Lagrave.

"Of course people are trying Star Wars - our development team are trying Star Wars! I'm one of the few people who's still playing it actually, but yeah we've seen a dip in subs. It certainly has to at least be attributable to The Old Republic, but it's also attributable to people who want to wait and get Mists of Pandaria, so it's not surprising.

"Are they going elsewhere? Yes they are. We don't have a lock on all the best games in the world - Skyrim was an amazing game."

I saw the intro areas, yeah, but I tried not to judge those too much. I can't remember the site but there were a bunch of videos, including the intro area, character creation, world exploration, and then a few that took place in the instances/missions/whatever.

I watched one of the instances and the players were fighting this one monster. First of all, the mob had like a billion health. It took 60 seconds just to take one down. The whole time, there were all these spell effects going off on the mob and I literally couldn't even see the damn character model. The whole time, none of the players moved.

Believe me, I'd love to see a gameplay video that shows a different experience. I was really looking forward to this game.

Bizarre, thanks for the heads up. I will definitely be on the lookout for more gameplay videos. I'm hoping you were just seeing videos of someone who is bad at games (like watching the Giantbomb tools play stuff) but I guess we'll see.

Haha yea. Then they'll hop on Pandaria early on, play it for a few weeks until they get bored, quit the game again and go back to 'hibernating'.

Most of my friends are "done" with WoW. They don't hate it or anything but future expansions won't grab them, they can only refine the game so many times. Like spindoctor said it had a good run and it's not that people necessarily dislike it but you can only play one game for so long (ok except Counter-Strike which lives forever).
