Three Battlefield 3 Expansions Announced

EA announces plans for three upcoming expansion packs for Battlefield 3, DICE's military shooter sequel, revealing Battlefield 3: Close Quarters to be released in June, Battlefield 3: Armored Kill for autumn, and Battlefield 3: End Game, which is due this winter. Here's word:
-- Battlefield 3: Close Quarters -- In Battlefield 3: Close Quarters, players are dropped into a frantic, infantry-only theatre of war. Frostbite 2 high definition destruction makes the environment come alive as everything from furniture to plaster gets shot to pieces. Players will feel the intensity of the world exploding around them as rubble and broken pieces pile up on the floor, while tight level design and vertical gameplay create a highly competitive environment. Battlefield 3: Close Quarters also introduces new weapons, assignments and unique dog tags to bring back to the base game.

-- Battlefield 3: Armored Kill -- Following the tight infantry gameplay of Battlefield 3: Close Quarters, DICE will release Battlefield 3: Armored Kill that ups the ante for vehicular mayhem as only Battlefield can do. Featuring new driveable tanks, ATVs, mobile artillery and more, Battlefield 3: Armored Kill also delivers huge battlefields for an all-out vehicle assault, including the biggest map in Battlefield history.

-- Battlefield 3: End Game -- The fourth expansion pack will ship in the winter but details remain tightly guarded.
On a semi-related note, EA has opened a new studio in Gothenburg Sweden specifically to develop projects using the Frostbite 2 engine that powers Battlefield 3.

So can you not have tactical/thoughtful gameplay in an interior environment? I just don't understand jumping to the conclusion that including a few types of those maps apparently ruins the series. I approach it as more variety being a good thing: it's not as if they're removing all the wide-open/vehicular maps by adding some interior maps.

Sure that can happen but it hasn't in any existing BF3 maps. The designers go heavy on choke points and narrow hallways to accommodate the FOV limited console gamers and we end up with exactly what people are describing here. If the maps were actually well designed with reasonable flanking routes then that's always welcome but we haven't seen that since BF2. Look at Karkand as a great example of that and it's one of the most revered BF franchise maps. Unfortunately this time around we got Metro instead of something like Karkand.

I also agree with others, there are MORE than enough infantry heavy, chokepoint based games on the market. There is no need to do that this heavily in BF3. What sets BF apart from other franchises is the scale, when you lose that it's just a pretty FPS with a retarded client-side hit detection model.

Just curious... Why does simply being indoors equal idiot-friendly?

I play both BF3 and (currently) MW3, and I'm smart enough to know and appreciate the differences: in a lot of ways it boils down to (my impression) BF being more tactical and thoughtful, whereas CoD is running around like a headless chicken blowing crap up. Both are equally fun to me, depending on what gaming-mood I'm in. And personally, I'd love the chance to keep playing BF3 in different environments. It mixes things up.

So can you not have tactical/thoughtful gameplay in an interior environment? I just don't understand jumping to the conclusion that including a few types of those maps apparently ruins the series. That's bullshit, there are dozens of dumb infantry games for the COD kids to play already. They don't need to turn BF into another one.

Yep. What's really galling to me is that we finally have an engine capable of delivering unbelievable outdoor experiences and creating a true "Battlefield" feel and it's wasted on making walled boxes for idiots. There are so many idiot-friendly games on the market, it is really frustrating when they invade your favorite franchise and sway developer opinion through sheer weight of numbers. The BF games weren't exactly niche before, they told sold millions but now EA smells the Duty megabux so here we go.

I really like what this poster had to say over on bf3blog.com; seems to echo my own sentiments nicely:

People need to keep in mind that the DLC after this one is going to be heavily focused on vehicle warfare.

Some people like wide open maps, and some people, such as myself, enjoy the clusterfuck of people in tight infantry based maps. Is it because it has a Call of Duty element to it? Hell no. It’s because I enjoy the 24/7 carnage. I enjoy bullets flying around around me everywhere, and the constant sound of gunfire. Heck, I probably wasted a total of 5 days in hours from playing Strike at Karkand in Battlefield 2.

But don’t get me wrong; I also LOVE wide open maps. In BF2, Highway Tampa was some of the funnest game play I’ve ever had in any Battlefield game. I couldn’t begin to explain how many hours I’ve spent on that map having a blast with the heavy vehicle warfare.

My point is that everyone has their own preferences. Some people like the tight close quarters infantry combat, some people like wide open maps which focus more on vehicle warfare.

DICE seems like they are giving something for everyone; Close-Quarters for the people who enjoy tight quarters combat, and Armored Kill for the people who like wide open maps and vehicle warfare.

In conclusion, please don’t hate on someone else because of their preferences. We all have our likes and dislikes, but in the end everyone is getting a little something that they like; either it be Close Quarters, or Armored kill.

BS. They are making the false assumption that if you like big maps, you must also like vehicles. I like big maps, but I don't like vehicle-heavy big maps. That's my biggest complaint about maps like Firestorm or even more especially, Gulf of Oman. Gulf of Oman could be a good map, but if you end up with one team able to snag most of the vehicles, it becomes an exercise in futility.

I want more maps like Strike at Karkand - low vehicles, big map, lots of infantry fighting. And none of the announcements look like they are delivering that.

I'm saddened there's no expansion or DLC to copy what Project Reality offers. I think there's money to be made in making PR style gameplay more accessible in BF3. But Armored Kill might be fun for a while. The Karkand maps are amazing and might save the game from oblivion.

I however can't play BF3 for more than a round or two due to the constant visual blurring, shaking and other effects. It's just too much and it's hard on my eyes because they are trying to focus it out but it can't be. The game gives me visual or a sort of motion sickness because of the over-the-top visual feedback effects.

I'm back to playing BF2:PR and some ARMA2 also.

You can still have infantry only sections of a map where people who want that COD experience can fight in close quarters while another battle with all the elements of Battlefield is going on.

Like a shopping mall where the inside is basically infantry only and the outside all around the mall is full on balls to the wall combat with tanks, jeeps, jets, helo's. If you wanna be a little bitch and go play in the fountains and shit go for it but we'll be tearing shit up in the parking lot.

I hate all the maps where they were obviously trying to give it the COD treatment. They are horrid maps. Metro...my fucking god how did someone not pull that fucking disaster of a map on the drawing board?

This game would be so much better if they'd quit trying to change the core experience. It's a battlefield. Anything Goes. This is not some random corner of a building with a dozen guys having a gunfight. We want the whole goddamn building and 64 people and 6 blocks around as well and we want to bomb the shit out of people and fly around in a whirly death machine spitting cannon rounds at the poor bastards running around on the ground.

Man the FUCK UP you bitches. (DICE)

How dare other people get what they want too?! I demand that only MY wishes be catered to! *shakefist*

As for Metro, whether you like it or not, it's one of the most popular maps in BF3 with numerous 24/7 servers running it. But yeah, you're right, clearly no one likes it and it should have been removed.

Tool.

Sure they can, they can ban them. In fact, if you can get banned from your entire EA account from a forum post, why can't they do something similar for that? At the very least, perma ban them from the game so they have to go buy another copy and start over again.

Cheaters/hackers are definitely being banned, DICE just doesn't announce it every time a wave happens.

Also I'm not sure how much control EA has over Battlelog and the stat database, I'm pretty sure that's almost entirely DICE's deal.

Whatever happened to the patch that was going to address the cheaters? That has seemed to have been shut up real quick.

the patch would only directly address the mav "exploit" of being able to use it as an elevator to high up places that you can't get to otherwise, on most maps.

no patch will address cheaters, they've implemented a "report" system on battlelog (tiny little exclamation icon on player profiles) but I bet it doesn't even send a notice to anyone, probably sends the "report" right into the recycle bin.

I've reported cheaters in BF3 before and not a one has been banned yet. Most end up having stats reset but they live to cheat another day.

I struggle to think of a single game I have been more disappointed in than BF3. Bugs and cheaters galore and before they've even really made a stab at fixing any of it they announce expansions. Way to grab for that brass ring EA/DICE!

Well, there's a difference between exploiters, cheaters/hackers, and stat padders. Resetting stats is a fine way to deal with stat padders and exploiters, but there isn't much DICE can do to stop cheaters/hackers. Just don't play on any servers that don't use GCC or PBB, otherwise the onus is on the server admins to police their servers.

Well now, doesnt this seem a bit of a rippoff for those of you who bought the game? (I never bought BF3 I dont want to support EA and the Origin craptastic machine...)

Yea, EA marketing is a bunch of geniuses. They said to themselves "We used to talk trash about Activision charging people for map packs back when we were promoting Bad Company 2, so how are we going to get people to pay for map packs now?" Then one of the guys over by the fountain screamed "I got it, add some weapons and vehicles and call it an expansion!" Meanwhile the old man cleaning the floors walked by shaking his remembering a time when companies would routinely release new maps, vehicles, weapons and even game modes for free. Not out of the goodness of their hearts, but knowing that by continually supporting their game, it would keep their game sales up through word of mouth like so many of the MP giants of the past did. Not to mention the fact that paid-for MP content splits the community between haves and have nots.
