I was disappointed with Doom3 for many of the reasons mentioned, but particularly the limited MP.
4 player limit was small, but so were the maps, so that was 'ok'.
Biggest issue was how people just couldn't learn to bunny hop, and kept complaining about how slow the MP was, even though anyone who's played ID games before could run circles around the map(s) in an instant.
Then getting vote kicked for 'speed hacking'... sad.
I had a lot of fun with the MP.
The weapons had good balance.
The maps had logical layouts, that had at least 2+ good patterns you could run.
The in-game clock helped with timing powerup and weapon spawns (no need to look at external clock).
There was a decent amount of interesting jumps you could make, that actually paid off tactically (versus just for kicks).
The MP definitely suffered popularity-wise with the small maps.
Much more popular with the 1v1 types than with the PUG crowd.
And most players do PUGs.
