BioShock Infinite in October

2K Games announces an October 16, 2012 North American release date for BioShock Infinite, saying the first-person shooter sequel from Irrational Games will arrive in international stores on October 19th for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. "After BioShock, we had a vision for a follow up that dwarfed the original in scope and ambition," says Ken Levine (@iglevine), Creative Director of Irrational Games (@irrationalgames). "BioShock Infinite has been our sole focus for the last four years, and we can’t wait for fans to get their hands on it." Here's word on the game:
BioShock Infinite puts players in the role of Booker DeWitt, a hard-bitten former Pinkerton agent, together with the revolutionary AI companion, Elizabeth. The two struggle to escape the sky-city of Columbia, in a 1912 America that might have been. Armed with an arsenal of new weapons and abilities, they face menacing enemies, in unique expansive environments. Classic BioShock gameplay joins innovations such as aerial combat on high-speed Sky-Lines in the service of an immersive storyline – an Irrational Games signature.

I'd wait on reviews then. If I remember right, people said the FOV was messed up in the first one. They patched it, but even then I think people said it wasn't done right. And then when Bio 2 rolls around, guess what? All over again...

The FOV isn't a show stopper for me, but it is annoying that they can't seem to get it right, despite given multiple chances.

It's not the worst for sure, but it's recurring FOV woes (a common 2K issue in Bio, Bio2, and Borderlands) is annoying. It's not like it hasn't been pointed out a million times, yet they continue to fuck it up.

Having said that, I was looking forward to this game, and not using GFMFWL seals the deal for me.

It's not that they fuck it up, it's that they just don't care. Fans had to fight tooth and nail to get the opportunity to even pay for the DLC for Bioshock 2. 2K Games doesn't have a great PC track record.

BioShock has never had consolitis as bad as some games. Prez puts it well with his comment about the reasonable tradeoffs with mass-appeal. But still it had a bit of a consoley feel to it I never really liked. The news about the old school mode is pretty exciting and a huge step in the right direction. This is an obvious buy for me but I want to see some actual gameplay videos, not scripted set pieces, before I decide whether it's a day one purchase.

Seeing a game confirm they are using steamworks is pretty exciting. I recently booted up Civ V and was impressed how well the mods are built into the games interface. (I assume thanx to steamworks)

And Skyrim, just unbelievable addition to that game. An amazing title for the price but then you go and add mod support that makes it so easy for users to change and improve your game?

Un-fucking-believable improvement over the mod scene in the past. Last time I went in and checked I found a mod called Dynamic Vendors. Vendors will have more gold the more you sell in that location. So if I'm coming back everyday and unloading stuff onto that blacksmith vendor in that first town that guy will start having more and more gold as you'd expect from him having so much stuff to sell.

A simple and brilliant improvement to the game. I have put that game on the shelf for a bit while the mod community improves the game and I can't wait to go back and play more Skyrim. I just keep waiting for that one mod that pushes me over the top.

Or maybe just seeing some new DLC from bethesda will cause me to go back and finish the game so I'm ready for that new content pack.

I'll need prof that the "aerial combat on high-speed Sky-Lines" isn't anything more than a scripted quick time event to get the player from point A to point B.

also, give the players a FOV adjustment setting in the UI!!!!!!

I know that will never happen, F@#K

They lost the plot with the ending and it was starting to grind a bit. There wasn't enough variety. I got about half to two-thirds of the way through Bioshock 2 and just lost interest... I felt I'd already played it before.

BI looks to be a step in the right direction but graphically it looks a bit dated and the gameplay seems to be a bit gimmicky. I'll probably wait for the inevitable 50% off sale two months after launch. There are plenty of other games I'm more looking forward to.

But I'm not really sure about Infinite. The setting looks cool, but every trailer we've seen seems so utterly scripted, and some of the ideas that they're putting in just seem kinda too weird to really fit. (admittedly from memory.)

It might go on the "when it's $10" list.

This has to be the most hyped game ever. I'll also wait and see because I don't want another "developed on a console" PC title that tells me not to turn off my computer while saving a game and mouse acceleration that makes me want to throw up.

Definitely, same marketing BS as the first game with grandiose claims about dynamic events and AI that I bet are 100% scripted. I liked the first game for what it was but I'm not sure I want this for $60 after the decidedly average sequel.

Well to be fair it was a well done port (the Original Bioshock that is) as far as bugs and interface options are concerned. It all worked just like on the console, but it was rather well done.

However the huge turnoff for me was the horrible respawn/checkpoint system, horrid gunplay (at least with the mouse and keyboard) and the dumbed down 'augmentations' I forget what they were called. Movement was also very...strange...in the game. I really like smooth movement in FPS shooters, anything that feels like Im swimming in fluidic space feels damn wrong...

Very interested in this. Almost as interested to see how Irrational manages to fuck it up with limited activation DRM that keeps people from playing the game they legally paid for like they did with Bioshock. Hopefully it won't be an issue.

I didn't see as much in the way of consolitis in the Bioshock games as others did. They were weaker when compared to System Shock (the biggest reason being that SHODAN simply cannot be topped as a villain), but the trade-offs for more mass appeal were pretty reasonable in my view.
