Blizzard Cuts ~600 Staff

Blizzard Entertainment announces "staff reductions," as they are cutting approximately 600 positions, saying that: "The company anticipates approximately 90% of the affected employees will come from departments not related to game development," and that: "The World of Warcraft development team will not be impacted." The World of Warcraft Forums (thanks Joao via PC Gamer) have a message from Mike Morhaime with more on this. Here's a portion:
After evaluating our current organizational needs, we determined that while some areas of our business had been operating at the right levels and could benefit from further growth, other areas had become overstaffed. As a result, we need to scale down some of our departments and part with some of our colleagues and friends here at Blizzard. I know that you all understand how difficult this type of situation can be for anyone who might be affected, so I want to assure you that we'll be offering each impacted employee a severance package and other benefits.

I also want to emphasize that we remain committed to shipping multiple games this year, and that our development teams in particular remain largely unaffected by today's announcement. We're continuing to develop, iterate, and polish Blizzard DOTA, Diablo III, StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, as well as other, unannounced projects. We'll have exciting news to share in the coming weeks regarding Diablo III's release date, and will soon be holding a private media event to showcase the latest work on Mists of Pandaria. It goes without saying that we're working hard to get all of these games in your hands as soon as possible.

Well, for my part -- no. However, I did accuse them of bad management for over staffing by such a large margin.
How can you make such a bold claim?

Blizzard specifically said that new accounting practices and software enabled them to be more efficient in their customer service department. How the hell can you just go and claim they had "bad management" before and are just now fixing it?

Not to mention the fact that they simply need less customer service now with World of Warcraft continuing to lose subscribers.

Yeah just keep in mind when it was asked to cut spending to not have our credit rating lowered Obama refused to cut the asked for amount.

That isn't to say the GOP has played nice with him either, they haven't, but to say he's attempted to work with the GOP rather than squabble and play bipartisan games is even a bigger joke.

Aside from making the right call to go in and take out Bin Laden his presidency has been one blame everyone else statement after another, spending spending spending, and encouraging class warfare while getting little to nothing actually accomplished.

But hey don't let a little thing like reality stop you libs from praising him like he's the next coming of the Big JC himself.

Err, the original story has the link so we don't need a copy/paste of it but thanks. Also the "its just business" excuse doesn't hold by itself, normally you have to provide context and stuff if you want people to get that.

I love it how right-wingers simply dump communists/liberals/democrats in the same camp 'evil' camp. I guess its easier to simply label someone than to actually bring some valid arguments to the table.

Quite some time ago in the past (even before the US and its Constitution) anyone who was different or didnt conform to certain perscribed 'values' or 'beliefs' was likewise dumped into a boogeyman category. Does the term "Heretic" mean anything to you right winged bastards? Ill give you a clue, they burned them at the stake, usually in the name of Jesus Christ. Burninig statkes are sort of similar to burning crosses, but without the cross bar, for those who have no clue to what Im talking about.

This is not rocket science;this is called business!

"Everyone,

We announced today that we’re in the process of cutting a number of active positions, mostly non-development, throughout the company. I'm sure this announcement has sparked some questions from all of you, so I want take this opportunity to address those as best I can. Over the past several years, the company has grown rapidly and evolved to better serve you and the rest of our global community. Thanks to all of your support, we continue to serve by far the biggest subscription-based MMO community, as well as the most passionate eSports and online gaming communities, in the world.

In order to keep making epic game content while serving players effectively, we have to be smart about how we manage our resources. This means we sometimes have to make difficult decisions about how to best maintain the health of the company. We’re in the process of making some of those hard decisions now.

You've all come to expect Blizzard to live up to our mission statement with every game, and deliver the most epic entertainment experiences ever. You can continue to expect that and nothing less from us as we move forward."

And if you did a little fact checking you would have found that democrats routinely outspend republicans, and we're not even talking conservative republicans. But that's ok Cutter, live in your little fantasy world where liberal/communist/socialistic (because really they're all pretty much the same) ideology makes any sort of sense at all.

Yeah Obama sure has "saved" the economy, by continually blaming Bush 3 years into his presidency for his failures, spending billions on bail outs and a failed stimulus, and getting zero done because he refuses to work with the other side, after preaching how much he was going to work with the GOP while running.

Hope and change my ass.

The sad thing is he'll prolly get reelected anyway since all the Bozos on the GOP side aren't any better than he is. Cuts from the same cloth the lot of em.

With that said, businesses need to make money so their business can grow. If a business does not grow, they can not hire people. If a business loses money, you cannot expect them to keep people they cannot afford.

True, as far as it goes. But with that said, businesses also go too far to the other extreme when it comes to making a profit. It's part of the problem with the stock market system that we have, businesses consider themselves responsible to shareholders, and no one else. So rather than look at what would be good for both the business and society, they focus on what will be best for the shareholders - which is almost always maximizing profits. And even worse, they do this with a short-term perspective, because long-term planning with short-term losses will often result in a stock tanking, resulting in monetary issues.

Unfortunately, we haven't really found a good middle ground between the two competing systems, but we're definitely skewing too hard towards the corporate interests these days.

Yes, people are different (no brainer), but that is not what we are talking about here. There is a right and a wrong if we like it or not. There is truth out there. With that said, businesses need to make money so their business can grow. If a business does not grow, they can not hire people. If a business loses money, you cannot expect them to keep people they cannot afford. Stop complaining about corporations, the rich, etc...Instead focus on what YOU can do to make YOUR life better. For example, I hear a lot of complaining here about games. Well go get educated and make your own games-be the boss! There is nothing stopping you!

BTW I started my own LLC recently (Gasp)and even in this horrible economy (thanks Obama)I am doing pretty good.

Well said, Elefunk!
