Be nice if they added vsync to the options but the rest of the port stuff was good. The game itself is pretty boring though.

As with all Bioware games, this is a good port. The UI was redesigned specifically for PC and has a hotbar with drag 'n drop & hotkey support. The game is very well-optimized and supports in-game antialiasing. From what I've read, the full PC version will have higher-res textures as well.

There are some dubious design choices that have nothing to do with consolitis (the binary morality system, one-button-does-everything functionality, bad animation, etc) but if you enjoyed ME2, you'll very likely enjoy ME3.

Jesus, I honestly can't BELIEVE that they let that animation go??? It kinda looks like FemShep is runnin' with a full load in the uniform???

Hey guys. Been a long time lurker and Bluesnews fan for many years, good to meet you all.

How does one weird animation equal consolitis...? That seems a bit of a stretch, and not even what he was asking about.

Did you play ME2, by any chance? From the demo so far, ME3 feels and acts very similarly so that's an easy point of reference in terms of what to expect.

There're plenty of the usual PC options like graphics (which are fine, but admittedly less extensive than other games), audio, remappable controls, mouse settings, etc. so that doesn't seem console-y at all. You can utilize powers with the number keys or by pausing and doing it through a squad menu. Mouse input is very smooth, quick, and responsive. Regarding the UI, it seems very natural to get into the game and play with a mouse and keyboard; while playing the demo I never thought to myself "Gee, this'd be easier with a controller," or have any glaring instance of things feeling badly ported.

In all honesty the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that would come across as console-y is the uber-combined "one button to interact/cover/jump" function. I do sort of miss separate keys to crouch, pick up, interact, etc. but that's not a game-breaker by any stretch. Lots of games have weird control quirks that take some getting used to and I just chalk it up to that.

How bad is the consolitis on a console-led game that started as an Xbox exclusive title...did you really ask that question?

Yes, I did. As many here have pointed out that Bioware ads PC-tailored UI to their PC ports. I'm wondering how good a job they did.

So, again, I'm asking, how bad is the Consolitis?

As skeptical as I was of mp being added to the game, it turned out to be a hell of a lot of fun. Playing with my friends in the demo last night was the most fun I've had in co-op since l4d2 came out.

The Multi is what really sold me on this game after playing 5 hours straight of Coop the first night it was available. It's such a simple concept. Horde/Wave mode, but through in a few Objective based rounds to keep it from being a "Set up defense in one room and farm" game. We initially tried Silver and got absolutely rapefisted. Dropped it to Bronze and it became fun watching as we became more powerful as we leveled up. Now Bronze is a cake walk and it's time to move it back up to Silver. I can see me and the people I play with having fun with this game for awhile just like we did L4D.

Under Settings > Downloaded Games, do you have a folder on E:\ specified? I just opened up my Origin (which is on D:\Games\Origin) and the demo went right to downloading and installing in the Origin games folder there.

I enjoyed the quick bit I got to try of the demo so far... I immediately felt right at home playing again, from the grand "holy crap save the world please" cinematics to the "it just feels like ME" gameplay. Definitely Looking forward to the full game.

Thanks for the tips, guys!...;) For some strange reason it did not occur to me to check "settings"...!
It is well known that I cannot err--and so, if you should happen across an error in anything I have written you can be absolutely sure that *I* did not write it!...;)

WTF?

So with ME2 they went the shooter route. I didn't like that decision but I have to admit that if you want a shooter then ME2 is a better shooter than ME1.

But this is crap. As a shooter.
1. Your movement speed is ridiculous,
2. cover is glitchy, and
3. half the time you wanna get into cover you do something else because the Use/Sprint/Cover button is now the Use/Sprint/Cover/Roll/Collect Stuff button (it did collect stuff in ME2, too, but there was hardly anything to pick up. Press X to Jason all the way guys).
4. And on a purely subjective note it doesn't really feel like I'm there; there's a detachment between you and the character. Perhaps it's just the horrible animations.

The combat animations are horrible (for J. Jonah Jameson's opinion click here), in fact they've gone from good in ME1 to meh (or bad if you played a female shepard because they canned the female animations) in ME2 to ridiculous in ME3. Anderson is waddling in front of your face, Shepard's either to static if you run or ridiculous (see above) if you sprint and faces still are off, sometimes creepy (they might wanna call Valve).

The PC version is an afterthought.
a. We already know that they weren't ready to invest the time to port Gamepad support (too time consuming; funny how lots of one man operations manage to do it).
b. Textures are bad; in particular there's still the complete disconnect between a character's face and his body in all of the games copious close-ups in conversations.
c. Oh and you can no longer holster your weapon because they had to can the animation on XStation for memory reasons and couldn't be bothered to leave them in on PC.
d. There's no way to unbind the Press-X-to-Jason button and separate all those completely disparate actions. At least not officially, which leads to
e. There's still no mod support. And I'm not talking about a full SDK but simple stuff like retexturing. Expect some ini hacks at some point but that's it.

The demo was really too short and too targeted towards teh HalOZ crowd to judge the story but Shepards interaction with the Defense Committee was definitely written by Bad BioWare

Conclusion: I'm too invested in the series not to buy it. But I'm not 15 anymore and I got so many games I want to play on my shelves that I won't bother with that Origin crap and ME3 until the Steam Christmas Sale and EA's inevitable copycat operation.

Expect me to break down and buy it no later than May.

I'm one of the few people who really didn't like the direction Mass Effect 2 took the series: Mass Effect 1 was a game I absolutely loved, and Mass Effect 2 I could mostly just tolerate. What little I've seen of the single player in ME3 looks pretty atrocious, but I installed the demo to check out the multiplayer and it's tons of fun. I hate having to unlock every single little tiny thing, but the combat feels a lot like the original Mass Effect, and since I'm one of like 4 people on Earth who liked that game more than ME2, I'm enjoying ME3. The question is whether multiplayer will have any players left when I eventually buy the game when it goes on sale. $60 or whatever they're asking is too much after I got burned on ME2.

I liked the combat in ME2 but didn't really care for the story or neutering of the RPGish elements so I'm there with ya man. Planet exploration with the mako beats the piss out of silly busywork any day even with how bland most of the worlds were. Places like the Citadel were big and had presence. I'll have to check out the MP tonight if its as good as people say, I'm pleasantly surprised to hear a lot of positive comments about it.
