Ubisoft Online Disruption

Ubisoft announces plans to change facilities where servers are hosted for many of its online games, which will result in some downtime. These moves will begin on February 7th, and will impact the following PC games: Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2, Might & Magic : Heroes VI, and The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom for Windows, and Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell Conviction for OS X. Thanks Computer and Video Games.

A case study in how not to do DRM; the pirates will be able to play their games fine yet paying, lawful customers will not be able to play.

Even if Ubisoft announced tomorrow they were doing away with their online DRM, I still wouldn't buy another game from them. Their brand is forever blacklisted as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, you only need Uplay for the dynasty stuff. It's non-essential. You can still play any of the campaigns or skirmish maps without it.

You've done about all the protection from piracy you're going to do at this point.

I think Ubisoft could do a lot to regain some good will were it to switch the "online requirement" to a sales window, rather than a constant thing. Were it only to take place for, say, the first 1-3 months of the game's release, after which it was removed completely, I could see a lot more people being willing to put up with it (or buying the game after the window was up). And it would have satisfied the requirement to try and stop the initial piracy (although, considering history, it wouldn't really have done that, but...).

I made the mistake of buying Hawx 2 without checking to see if it had Ubi's "always-on, always -stupid" garbage. Hawx 2 is not even popular enough to warrant a wares version (at least one I could find), so yeah, I'm a dumbass.

What really bottles the mind, though, is that they left it in AC2 and Settlers 7 after forgoing it altogether for ensuing AC titles. Does anyone at this company use reason at all? Why are games that were released well over a year ago still saddled with this crap? It seems the stupidity at Ubisoft knows no bounds.

Hey Ubi, it's time to release a patch that does away with the online requirement for these games. You've done about all the protection from piracy you're going to do at this point. If people haven't bought Assassin's Creed by now they're probably not going to.

So save yourself a chunk of money and make your existing customers happy by setting them free.

It affects singleplayer, confirmed in PCGamer and RPS, for many of UbiDRm games.

So I guess the name of this service should be..."UMightPlay"

Anyhow, to answer your question Horrorscope....according to the announcement the games are not playable at all. They do not list any exceptions or specifics that would lead me to believe that they are only referring to multiplayer online needs. I assume this means that the Uplay auth servers are part of the move.

That's exactly the point, all of these were the "requires online connection" games, so you can't play them - at all - while the servers are down.

edit: Actually, I think the Heroes game only requires the connection for "bonus content", so it might be playable in reduced function mode.

So the question has to be...

Does this affect single player usage?

I know they had a lot of apps that relied on an online connection to some extent to play games at all.
