So... do we still think they are not trying to compete with Steam? Why wouldn't some one want to compete? The digital download service is a growing market with lots of money to be made.
Well to compete with steam, you need to offer something that makes it attractive to switch and use it. Origin doesn't make itself attractive, it doesn't offer anything new, and it doesn't offer anything to make itself compatible, or useful either. At best, it's another download service. At worst, it's already got a reputation as spyware which flys in the face of various privacy laws around the globe(note the double/triple agreements, and automatic opt-outs now).

So as it stands, origin is late to the game, offers nothing, does nothing, and doesn't do anything that people can't get from a service that they feel, and many already trust. Even more so, valve even if you're a capital a-asshole, on their forums, won't 'ban' you from the games you own. They're yours, but EA will.

Not to mention that big competitors might finally stop steam to price gauge aussie and eu customers. Wishful thinking surely.. but possible. Then again, Origin is currently not even competing on a price level to steam. Least alone actual cheaper digital stores.
Well remember, it's not steam who sets the price. It's those who sell on steam. So if you have complaints on the prices, you should be yelling at them.
