Star Trek Online F2P Begins

Perfect World Entertainment announces the beginning of the promised free-to-play era for Star Trek Online, the Trekkie MMORPG:
"We couldn't be more excited," said Jack Emmert, CEO, Cryptic Studios, Inc. "Updating Star Trek Online to the popular free-to-play model removes those barriers of entry that previously kept fans and casual gamers away. Anyone can download and play Star Trek Online at no cost. There's no better way to see how sitting in the captain's chair feels."

With the launch of Star Trek Online free-to-play, anyone can download and play the game for free without a retail copy or subscription. All players may enjoy Star Trek Online's many features for free. Players do, however, have the ability to access additional optional features through a virtual store.

In Star Trek Online, the Star Trek universe truly comes to life on a massive scale. Players captain their own starships as part of the Federation or Klingon Empire in a persistent online universe, journey to strange new worlds and take part in epic ground and space missions.

"We couldn't be more excited," said Jack Emmert, CEO, Cryptic Studios, Inc. "Our game already doesn't have enough subscribers to keep it as a premium MMO and has now joined the cash store ranks of Maple Story and Flyff on it's way to it's ultimate form"

"We have strong hopes that within the next 18 months Star Trek Online will join other MMO luminaries such as The Matrix Online and be retired forever to the Hall of Fame."

Fixed.

If only this would have come out before The Old Republic. I would have been all over it. Maybe in a couple months when I'm burnt out on Star Wars.

Marcus: ... Bullies. Tiny d*ck egotists who hurt people for no reason, make people lock their doors at night. People who make general existence worse, people like you.

My inner trekkie is tempted to try this out, despite my hatred of MMO's. Couldn't hurt I guess, since the price is right.

Cool beans. I'll have to head back and check it out. I want to mess around with the Foundry.
