Ubisoft Vancouver Closed

Ubisoft has closed its Vancouver Studio, reports GameInformer. The studio, known as Action Pants before it was acquired by Ubisoft in 2009, primarily created sports games. "Ubisoft confirms that we have made the difficult decision to close its studio in Vancouver," a Ubisoft spokesperson told them. "Unfortunately, we haven’t found the right formula for success for the talented team there. We thank our Vancouver team for their hard work and the projects that they have delivered. Team members will have the opportunity to consider positions in other Ubisoft studios and we will work with each of them to help find the best next step, whether it be within Ubisoft or outside."

Hey, considering it is Vancouver the problem was weed and/or heroin.

So, in order to show them your middle finger for how they treat PC gamers, you'll increase their console sales and pay them more money?
Yeah, that will teach them!.

Actually, as much as I'd like to join you guys in UBI-hate, there doesn't really seem to be a reason here. The studio was formed in 2005 and they attached themselves to UbiSoft in order to get funding to make a game. The collateral for the game? The company itself. Four years later, the game hadn't been made, so UbiSoft got the development studio. To my knowledge, they haven't yet delivered a game. They were working on a Smurfs game and some Wii Sports title. Doubt that they were exactly AAA titles.

Now, I know that games take years to develop and that over one hundred people at one point worked for Action Pants, but on the surface, this seems to me to be a 3DRealms type situation. Most publishers aren't happy when shovelware takes 6+ years to make.

That said, I still will never, ever buy an UbiSoft game on my PC. As silly as it sounds, I write UbiSoft about the situation. Despite all common sense to the contrary I *HAVE* gotten replies from developers and publishers before about my complaints, and I don't mean form-letter retorts either. Mind you, it's usually from devs saying "Hey, not our choice, trust me, we agree with you, but the publishers are the ones with the money". Of course, UbiSoft isn't one of these companies. But I *LOVE* AssCreed, and I'll be damned if I won't play it on my 360. I love showing horrifically immoral companies my middle finger by not buying their stuff, but I have limits. Plus, of course, I think the devs deserve the sale, so for me, playing it on the 360 is an acceptable compromise.

Point being... this studio doesn't seem to have produced a single thing over 6 years and thus... I can't *REALLY* say I blame UbiSoft. I know that's only the surface story, but still...

Yeah it's the DRM that keeps me from buying settlers 7 too.

Its their DRM that prevents me from buying any of their games. I've seen a few games I wanted to buy on Steam but the moment I see it's Ubisoft I refuse to touch it. Yes, its their choice what kind of DRM (if any) they use. Its also my choice of what companies I buy and support.

Ubisoft needs to move shop to the U.S. we will welcome them! Even though the DRM they require is complete BS, some of their IP's are really good. We should be doing what ever we can to get companies to leave other countries and move here. Luv U BC, but it's business.

Yes I knew that you had to have a presence. So they had 3 studios in Canada?

Ubi makes some games I enjoy, what I don't enjoy is the DRM that prevents me from playing my purchased legit games, such as Settlers 7.
Ah don't mind me I'm running on 3hrs of sleep. I can't process half the stuff I'm reading. But yeah there's 3 studios, the one in montreal is doing arg/assassins creed stuff and a couple of other things, and the one in toronto is doing tom clancy stuff. BC is kinda a shitty place to setup a studio anymore, expensive, hard to retain workers, and other stuff.

Yeah it's the DRM that keeps me from buying settlers 7 too.

Yes, if you want funding you have to have a presence here. They have the montreal and toronto studio's still.

Shack has word that they worked on straight crap...
"The team was primarily responsible for developing sports games for the French publisher. Its portfolio included games like Pure Futbol, Academy of Champions: Soccer, and MotionSports Adrenaline.
None of these titles have taken off, and many have been critically bashed. Pure Futbol, for example, currently holds a 38 average score on Metacritic. MotionSports received a 41."

Ubisoft's management/meddling probably; don't wanna fault any of the developers who may have worked/slaved there.

Sad people lost their jobs (or have to move). Not sad it was related to Ubisoft.
