The Old Republic Update Next Week

BioWare announces next Tuesday will see the launch of Rise of the Rakghouls, a new content update for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Here's what this will add to the month-old MMORPG: "Rise of the Rakghouls features a new Flashpoint and a new Operation as well as a number of changes made throughout the entire game, including level 50 bracketing for PvP WarZones, the addition of anti-aliasing and changes to Open World PvP on Ilum." Looking ahead, they say they will continue to support the game with such updates "throughout the year on a regular cadence," and the update that follows this is due in March with new Flashpoints, Operations, WarZones, and game systems. Here's word on the new content in next week's patch:

  • Flashpoint: Kaon Under Siege is a completely new and unique group combat experience located on Kaon, a planet in the Tion Hegemony, a strategically important sector of the galaxy that has remained neutral, groups of up to four Republic or Imperial players must race to Kaon to eliminate the Rakghouls outbreak, securing the allegiance of the Tion Hegemony for their respective sides. This Flashpoint will be available for level 50 characters only and will feature Normal and Heroic modes.
  • Operation: Karagga’s Palace, is a continuation of the game’s second launch Operation. In the Operation, teams of 8 or 16 players will face off against Karagga and the Hutt Cartel after the Hutts abandon their famous neutrality and breach agreements with both the Republic and Empire. Concerned by the threat of another combatant in the war for galactic control, both factions send teams of their most powerful heroes to confront Karagga and determine his intentions. This Operation will feature Normal, Heroic and Nightmare difficulty modes.

While politics has little to do with what MMO I enjoy or not, can you not admit Obama has done little to actually act on anything he promised his deluded followers? For all his talk of working with Republican's to balance the budget he's done the opposite, pushed a non constitutional health care bill through congress, took military action in Libya after whining about Iraq and Afghanistan. Unemployment is still through the roof. How's that hopey changy shit working out for ya?

TOR is fun imo, to each their own and all but you don't see me pissing in every GW2 thread, granted you tend to troll up Blue's on a regular basis anyway, I guess that's you're calling in life.

SWTOR also reminds me of Age of Conan. The world is not open, it's a narrow linear path to the next area.

It does vary from zone to zone, but that's been a complaint of mine also.

And the auction house! Holy fuck, whoever came up with that interface needs to be fired, immediately. Oh all the things they try to emulate from WOW, how did they manage to take the AH design backwards?

One of the huge problems I had with SWTOR is that 99% of the monsters and NPCs stand in one spot and never move. Ever. They're not roaming around so it looks they are living creatures, they are animatronic displays slapped there to amuse you on your linear Disney-ride through content.

SWTOR also reminds me of Age of Conan. The world is not open, it's a narrow linear path to the next area.

Also, Rakghouls. Haha. Everyone on my server (Vulkar Highway) was complaining by the time they reached the end of the planet Taris. Jesus, please, make the Rakghouls stop, we're so tired of them. And then Bioware is like, LOOK! MOAR RAKGHOULS!

GW2 is removing the concept of 'end game' as it stands in MMOGs today by removing raiding entirely and making 'leveling' less than a strict linear path. Because you can de-level and be boosted in levels to do virtually any activity in the game, at any level, essentially the entire game is end game. You might be level 10 and get boosted to 80 for PvP or you might be 80 and get de-leveled to 30 when your guild gets together to do the Tequatl dragon's Dynamic Event chain. Likewise you might really like the look of the gear from dungeon A that is level 50. So you are de-leveled to about 53 and run the explorable mode (which is branching, has dynamic content within and is decidedly challenging). You run it several times and get the set of items, then work towards getting some transmutation stones to convert your 80 gear's stats to that new outfit.

So you see, the entire game is end game. And that doesn't mean there isn't anything to do at 80 either. Just like GW1 there is still a plethora of content to explore, your branching personal story to finish (I can say one thing about GW2's story over SWTORs, it can actually change based on the choices you make). There are guild and personal achievements to attain, that mean more than just wow style points. There are traits and elite skills to obtain. Elites require completion of their own individual activity, and some certainly will not be easy. Traits will work similarly, and they augment your characters abilities to make them your own.

So yea, no raiding in GW2. Instead they did what MMOGs probably should have done half a decade ago, make it so the game doesn't start or stop at cap, but rather make an MMOG where all content is potentially end game content.

Edit: on topic, I'm enjoying SWTOR a lot right now. I am rather 'over' themepark MMOGs as they stand today (WOW clones) and will almost certainly get bored FAST at 50. But I level slowly, my main is only lvl 29 atm and I've been playing since the 15th. In the end the game is an enjoyable hold over until The Secret World hits and I can decide if it's worth playing.

In the end though no matter what I'm playing, when GW2 comes out I'm jumping ship. The only way I won't is if the game bombs, if everything they've said about the game is a lie. But then again I already know it isn't. I've played the game, several hours of it in fact. PAX East was fun, had a lot of different things to do in the game and I got a really good taste of just how much of a leap forward the game really is, even right out of the gate at level 1.

So essentially there is raiding you just don't have to grind to max level to participate. Cool concept and I hope you enjoy your time in GW2.

Personally I'm enjoying ToR even though I'm very critical of the way Bioware's titles have been developed recently, I'm having fun with the game, playing with friends and that to me is what's important.

GW2 is going in a different direction and actually sounds like it very well could be innovative in some ways. Excellent post, Fion. And that is exactly why I'm stoked for GW2. The only thing I really enjoyed in the SWTOR beta was the shock collar on my slave and slapping her around. Now that was funny.

Not to detract from anything you stated, but I do want to mention some things with regard to this. Firstly, SWTOR has up-leveling for PVP, and Champions Online has down-leveling for PVE (sidekick mode), and considering they use the same engine I imagine the latter may be doable in SWTOR at some point. I'd also like to add that there have been MMO conventions in the past to get rid of endgame (AA in EQ, for example). The only thing I see GW2 bringing to the table that's new is the DE, which to be honest I'm not sold on until I see it in working action. Otherwise, though, I agree in hoping these ideas become standards in the industry.

Could you elaborate on this? Maybe there's been an announcement I missed (could be, been busy playing SWTOR), but GW2 has less endgame than just about any massive I've looked at... In the last 8 or so years...

I was thinking about the Dynamic Events system: http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/dynamic-events/dynamic-events-overview/

No Raids, just dynamically generated events from solo up to guild size. I don't know if they'll pull it off or not, but it sounds interesting and a change from Raids/Instances/BGs.

I actually enjoyed playing TOR, until I hit 50. Then I rolled an alt and I'm enjoying it again, until I hit 50 again probably. With such an emphasis on solo play, storytelling and individual instances I was just surprised there's nothing like it at 50 and no upcoming plans to add anything other than operations, flashpoints or warzones.

At this point I'm really enjoying the game, and I really thought I'd hate it. The MMO burnout thing had set in. Maybe it's the single player aspect or just new areas... I dunno. What I do know is I'm enjoying logging in, playing both my story and the grouping. I'm also looking forward to playing a few alts on both factions.

There are bugs, and some issues that I'll either have to adapt to or give up on (ability delay), but it's early.

Of course, end game will be what keeps me subscribing for long periods. We'll see.

Well done so far.

1-49 very similar to Bioware singleplayer RPGs, 50 bog standard MMO raid or die. Got that? It wasn't a complicated concept.

As for complaining about a comparison to WoW, it's the market leader. I'm well aware it didn't invent the concepts it uses.
