Out of the Blue

PC & Tech Authority has an article looking back at the Commodore 64, noting this is the 30th anniversary of this seminal gaming system (thanks Ant via Slashdot). I have a C128 in a box stashed away that was bestowed upon me years ago, and one of these days I'm going to set it up, though I have a strong fear that many of the games I have may not load, as I don't think 5.25" floppy discs were made to stand the test of a fraction of the time that has passed since they were made.

Blue, keep it stashed. In another 30 years by around the time you'll be ready to retire, you'll be able to sell it for huge amount of money!

Why would you ever want to, when:

- It's available on GOG, running on all modern PCs.
- It was actually FREE on GOG for awhile. (Not sure if it still is.)

Nostalgia of playing it on the old C64 is about the only reason, otherwise I'd play it an emulator to easily save game state in case of crashes. Who am I kidding though? I have a full time job and 100's of modern anti-aliased games I haven't finished yet I'd rather waste time on. Sometimes I wish I was poor and only had a 386 with a soundblaster...then I'd be retro-gaming for sure

Ugh, home sick for 3 days, now doctor says I should take tomorrow off as well since I'm still contagious.

I'm on my second batch of antibiotics and still feel like crap. At least it's out of my chest, now I get my damn sinus to shut off...

I love my Commodore (I think 128). It's what introduced me to computers, which became my career. I also had a huge amount of games for that thing.

As for pure gaming machines go, it's my 2nd favorite (after my SNES). Including my various gaming rigs over the years.

If you're worried about the floppies standing the test of time, might I suggest one of these:

http://www.1541ultimate.net/content/index.php

It is pure awesome. (and, yes, at €129, awesome does come at a price)

I heart my C64 and I think I always will.

Chances are good that the 5.25" discs still work. I booted up one of my working vic20's the other day and was able to successfully load programs off tape still. And those tapes are over 30 years old now.

I've still got my old C64 and 1541 drive in a storage locker. Along with a bunch of old games I bought like the original Ultima4 box, disks, cloth map, and ankh. Loading times and swapping disks basically guarantees I won't be playing U4 on C64 again though - even if the media is good after all these years. I haven't tried running the C64 in like 10+ years I think. It's funny how big and heavy that 1541 floppy drive is compared to today's (almost dead) floppy drives.

actually 5.25 are way more resilient than 3.5 floppies

I still have a working C64 which I turn on occasionally. Perhaps the most influential microcomputer to shape the gaming industry, along with the ZX Sinclair Spectrum.
