Skyrim Patched, LAA Support Coming

The Bethesda Blog has word on the version 1.3 update for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that's now available on Steam. They also announce they will be rolling out a patch next week for the Windows PC edition of the RPG sequel to support Large Address Aware configurations. Here's word on what the new patch does:

  • General stability improvements
  • Optimize performance for Core 2 Duo CPUs (PC)
  • Fixed Radiant Story incorrectly filling certain roles
  • Fixed magic resistances not calculating properly
  • Fixed issue with placing books on bookshelves inside player purchased homes
  • Fixed dragon animation issues with saving and loading
  • Fixed Y-look input to scale correctly with framerate

Yup, modded the exe with LAA, and now I'm back to very rare crashes. *sigh* I guess it's nice they'll be including it in an official patch, but I'd hate to have been playing all this time without finding out about it unofficially.

Right now I'm not, figured I'd wait for the "official" LAA patch this week. But with the number of crashes I've been getting, think I won't bother waiting. The weird thing is there seems to be nothing going on to cause these crashes, I'll just been walking around, and suddenly I'm back at the desktop.

Yeah, that's pretty typical of the uber-shitty Bethesda implementation of Gamebryo...

LAA fixes those issues for most people, though.

As an aside, to talk about the actual patch for a second... I've been getting noticably more crashes with this one than the previous version. I used to be able to play for 2-6 hours before I'd get a crash, now I'm getting 1 every hour (or more). Definitely making me hit the quicksave button more often, but it's also quite frustrating. Plus I'm getting some video corruption (bad texture skinning, etc) that I never had previously either. Could be LAA related, I suppose, as that would be the only other change, but can't be positive.

Are you using LAA, or not using LAA with 1.3?

+1
Exact same issues with my rig, except that I used to be able to play even longer without a crash before the patch.

I don't take any issue with the concept that crashing is more often than not related to the user's environment. But as Jerykk was talking about earlier, the better a game is optimized the less often that's a problem.

The thing I do take issue with is absolutism, "never" and "always" shouldn't be thrown around so easily. Any hardcore PC gamer (or hell even console gamers) claiming they "never crash" is lying or has a terrible memory. A more accurate statement would be "I very rarely crash".

InBlack, I of course understand where you're coming from. I was indeed calling the kettle black, there. That doesn't mean I'm wrong in my statement.

No idea why you thought StingingVelvet and I were one of the same, though.

Also, people who make their PC unstable by installing all kinds of crap are indeed stupid in that regard. I didn't say they are stupid by definition. I think I can speak of fact when I say many people don't know what's right and wrong for their PC. I alone had to tell many people not to install video drivers over older ones because that could cause instability, for example...
I thought Hollywood had hit rock buttom. Then this happened.

Yes, many crashes are due to the instability of games.. but countless others found on the internet are due to people tinkering with their PC: overclocking, downloading some random crap they don't know shit about...

I, like StingingVelvet, have never had crashes that weren't simply, if you will, the game's fault. Except for one little fuck-up where I did something wrong in the BIOS settings many years back. Call that bragging if you will, I'm kinda proud of it indeed.

Wow I actually thought you and SingingVelvet were one and the same person good to know I was wrong.... Thanks for clearing up that up, although it is kind of amusing that you refer to us (Bluesnews' regulars I assume) as a pit of, and I quote:
narcissists & bloodhounds
and yet both you and StingingVelvet are the ones in the tread going on about how YOU never had crashes, and how it cant be the game's fault but its STUPID sheep users and blah blah (insert narcissistic ego bullshit here)

So yeah...funny shit

I'm going to tentatively agree that I have very few crashes like that.

Sure but that's reasonable, a far cry from I never crash and users are dumb, my computer is the best blah blah etc. Yep, many users are not as tech literate as others, likewise the industry doesn't exactly ship perfectly stable, bug free games all of the time. Some people here need to go read line one of the patchnotes a few times again.

Uh....right on. Anyway, a two second google search verifies that you crash and then post something like "I honestly 100% never crash or have issues with Bethesda games". We're just wasting time with semantics now as Sepharo suspected though. If forum posts about technical problems "dont mean shit" then why bother reading and responding to them. Even if every single computer user in the universe was an idiot and you were the supreme overlord of Windows technical support I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish. You can't browbeat everyone into submission or something.

Do people who overclock experience more technical problems? Maybe but maybe some of those are the kinds of users who also understand how to take care of their system and troubleshoot their problems. Either way, everyone who posts about issues on forums can't be an idiot who overclocks and doesn't understand basic troubleshooting or maintenance. If that's the case then you're included given that you've posted on forums about technical problems.

I'm going to tentatively agree that I have very few crashes like that.

One of the things I'm anal about is knowing every program that runs at startup on my PC. I frequently check to see if anything new is installed and stop it from running. That includes any messenger programs, Office, Groove Monitor etc.

The only things that run at startup for me are Steam, APC Powerchute UPS software, my CPU temperature/fan monitor and Daemon Tools(sometimes).

I don't use antivirus software...because I literally never get viruses. I don't open any email attachments that I cannot 100% verify are legit (and never any .exe files sent via email), use Facebook apps of any kind.

I do semi-frequent scans with Malwarebytes and a couple other anti-malware apps. I meticulously review and control what updates Windows downloads.

Apart from being slow to update to the newest video drivers, I don't get many game crashes that aren't usually a known game fault and awaiting a fix from the dev or community.

I also don't buy ATI video cards. I've gotten rather tired of watching people bang their heads in frustration every time a new game comes out and inevitably it runs more stable on nVidia hardware. Then comes the wait for new drivers or a patch that makes ATI stuff work.

I also routinely pull my system apart, clean it, change my thermal compound(on both my CPU and Video card) etc.

Preemptively I can say I have had a crash here and there over the 20+ years I have been a PC gamer, but never a crashing problem, by which I mean more than one or a consistent issue with a certain game. My CPU fan busted once, and caused a crash or two from overheating until I figured that out. Frontlines Fuel of War crashed on me when launching a few times until I updated a driver which fixed it. Those are honestly the only crashes I remember in the last 10 years.

You should try Dark Void. There's a 100% consistent crash during one of the early cinematics. Capcom never even bothered to patch it. If you don't experience that crash yourself, I will declare you The Master of Stability.

I have to assume there are a lot of games you've never played. Tribes 2 and Titan Quest were both notoriously crash-prone at launch. Same with Giants. And Magicka. And Rise of the Argonauts. And Gothic 3. And Arcanum.

You're posting in a patchnotes thread, the third one for this game alone and I doubt it'll be the last. People aren't just making it up but if you want to imagine everyone is an idiot and that you are the guy from Hackers then go right ahead and live in that fantasy.

This speaks exactly to my point... why is it okay to be cynical and think most people are idiots when bitching about something from a company, but it's not okay when speaking about consumers being stupid? I don't understand that... the posters here are generally the most cynical and superior I have seen on the internet, but turning that back on the legions of idiot consumers in the Western world is not kosher? I don't get it.

In general I think my point is pretty common sense, as I said in the post. Most people do not take good enough care of their computers, overclock their hardware, run on settings too high for their hardware and clutter their processes and drivers with random shit. These factors all cause problems like crashes and performance issues.

You can say PC developers should compensate for all of that, and they do to some extent, but at the end of the day the PC is a platform where you have to take some responsibility for your PC and expect some issues if you don't.

Ok, you were just lying then but either way I doubt anyone is impressed or even give a shit about some foolish bragging that's barely one rung above nyah nyah nyah.
