Serious Sam 3: BFE vs Pirates

DSOGaming has word on an anti-piracy measure in Serious Sam 3: BFE, Croteam's just-released first-person shooter prequel. Apparently illegal copies of the game will spawn an immortal speedy red arachnoid that will hunt down the player. This trailer shows the thievery-hating scorpion in action.

That's cute... too bad it can't be rigged to kill the pirates for real.

you’re a real genius, like you haven’t pirated anything in your entire life right?

This one always cracks me up too. I don't think piracy is a good thing by any means and I don't like seeing it endorsed on forums like these where we have industry folk around. That being said, I downloaded a shitload of stuff in my youth and I doubt anyone here is different. If anyone wants me to believe they never committed a single act of piracy in their lifetime then I'll start moving to dodge their giant nose attempting to stab me. Even the biggest idiots in my school figured out how to download mp3s and movies when I was a kid.

3. There will be ALWAYS a working crack. Always.

Afaik, there is no "working crack" for this game and I thought there was a handful of other games that were never cracked. Weren't there issues with cracking Silent Hunter 5?

Most of the time when a game goes uncracked its due to lack of interest from both consumers and the "scene". Also these days many games are cracked by non-scene members and uploaded through Usenet/P2P, so they don't get the same exposure. I have no idea about this particular game though.

The only way to make a truly uncrackable game would be to basically build a streaming client/server model like OnLive. Even then in theory it's technically possible that someone could reverse engineer it although that's unlikely given the amount of time and expertise required. We do live in the age of crowdsourcing though so nothing is impossible, I remember the Chinese and Russian cracking groups working on the UbiDRM with thousands of people submitting the database entries/checks. It was really impressive in a disturbing sort of way.

As for this particular game there is no crack right now but that isn't saying much considering its still quite new. Some take hours, some take months.

There are cracks out for this game, just not good ones at the moment. As for the interest in this game its very small. Plus this time of year is bad for games getting cracked because most people are on holiday or preparing for finals. So the crackers are essentially busy with other more important things. But don’t kid yourself it will get cracked. They always do.

I dont even think this game sold very well.

I remember for the Batman AA DRM there was a spot in a gas filled area where your cape glide wouldn't work. So people just changed the Ureal config to remove gravity, soar over the gas and continue the game.

I didnt expect this from Croteam, they are usually quite cool about this sort of thing which makes me wonder if the entire thing isnt just a marketing stunt...

Far as I know, FADE was pretty reliable and only kicked in for truly illegitimate copies of Armed Assault and such - unless I'm mistaken.
You are FADE was a neat idea, but ...

1. You cannot test all PC and OS configs out there. There will be ALWAYS legit customers who will experience bugs cuased by the DRM.

2. The DRM HAS TO TELL the player, that he plays an unlicenced copy. If not, the player just thinks the game is buggy and every chance of him buying the game is gone forever. I am always baffled by the sheer amount of stupidity when a dev proudly presents his new DRM trap, but always forgot to tell the player what causes this "special" behaviour.

3. There will be ALWAYS a working crack. Always.

4. There is still no proof that DRM will increase revenue.

No, see some of the other threads on blues that talk about this subject. I seem to recall someone saying it messed up on their legit copy.

I think some people would get the pirated version just for that.

Haha, I like this idea. Sort of like the blur effect that was in GTA4.

Wonder how long it will take the crackers to remove.

To my knowledge this hasn't happened yet to anybody (on Steam anyway) since it was released.
