SW:TOR is basically KOTOR 3 with multiplayer. The Jedi and the Sith each have four base classes each with their own storyline, and then there are various side quests that everyone shares.
When I played SWG at launch, there were roughly 4 enemy types and the combat wasn't anything amazing. TOR's combat isn't groundbreaking either but it's more streamlined and fun overall than SWG's.. Generally, TOR's combat is much like KOTOR's.
And overall, TOR is pretty much KOTOR 3(+). Compared to KOTOR, the areas are bigger and somewhat less linear and the graphics are better and there are more things to do in general (crafting, more quests, other people running around). Compared to SWG, the zones are much smaller but more focused. Some of the zones are tighter (Coruscant, Sith starting zone [I forget the name]) and some are more wide open (Tython, Taris). I don't think TOR has random missions of any kind, though it does have dailies. Also note that I only got up to about level 20, so I didn't see most of the planets.
In short, I thought SWG was quite good when it first came out, but I think TOR is far better. The smallish zones are the only real negative, but they are highly developed and just generally 'fit' better than in most MMOGs (where you suddenly go from a dark forest to a standard fantasy-type forest to a jungle).
I can easily recommend TOR to anyone. If you don't like MMOGs, turn off chat and imagine that the other people running around are echoes of other realities There are a few zones that are realistically multiplayer only, but they're not required - they give nice equipment though, and I had fun in them. Lag is noticeable but barely. I saw 2 or 3 instances of pseudo rubber banding where people were stuck for a few seconds, then they suddenly moved.. but for all I know they had Alt-Tab'd or the like.
tl;dr TOR GOOD This is a good summary.
While it doesn't have near the social options as SWG or any of its sandbox charm (or good space combat *cough*), TOR excels at telling a story and getting the player absorbed in the game just as you did in the original KOTOR, Mass Effect, or any other Bioware title. The bonus is that you get to do all this with your friends and it makes group content, such as flashpoints (dungeons), VERY fun.
While combat is very much like most of the hotkey MMOs out there, each class and specialization class has their own mechanics, some of them are pretty unique. For example Bounty Hunters, as they use abilities, build up heat. If BHs build up too much heat, they can't use those abilities. Also, if a BH maxes out his heat, it will decrease at a MUCH slower rate than if he had held back some and kept his heat at 50% or lower. I found this to be pretty unique as most MMOs just have a flat energy regeneration rate.
There's also certain zones on a few planets that are free for all PVP, and there's some actual reasons to be there too. The PVP zones feature rare resource nodes in higher quantities than you would typically find in the world, there are also vendors there that sell special items you can't find anywhere else. I've also heard of exclusive world bosses that spawn in these areas.
Oh... and there's Huttball, and it's awesome. I hope they will add a spectator mode to Huttball.
So yeah... no, it doesn't have all the dances that SWG had, nor the spiffy fully customizable player housing, or the ability to be the galaxys best shipwright. Come to think of it I haven't seen any pink hot pants either. That said, TOR offers up an array of rich storylines, well animated/interesting combat, and just feels much more focused than SWG did.
Now, will Bioware be able to add in content updates at a quick pace like Trion has done with Rift? Time will tell. |

Other than that, though, it is basically KOTOR 3.. chronologically that's where it picks up too I don't remember if it did have that option. Turn based was nice to think about and take the next action. |

Interesting and thanks. Is SW:TOR's battle mode still turned based like KOTOR1 (didn't try its sequel since I heard it sucked and was incompleted)? If so, then how does that work in multiplayer? Does everyone have to wait for the current player's move? It's like WOW (and I'm assuming most MMOS) where abilities have a timer, as well as a global cool down (IE you can't spam the basic attack 5 times in one second, and have them all count, etc).
While at least some of the classes are different, in the case of the smuggler I played, certain abilities work anywhere, while other only work from cover. And the jedi I played used basic attacks to build up points, and more powerful attacks consumed those points. |

I received that survey too and during the last and other beta cycle I was in grilled them on the "space combat". Hopefully there is enough interest to warrant an expansion. |

As I may have said before... I hope they keep the current system as a mini-game diversion for those who like it, release a fully featured space expansion with fighters/MP Ships/PVP/Smuggling and space piracy/ and Bioware's cinematic touch for those of us who do want a good space game. |

SOE just got tired of paying royalties to LA. All they had to do was reverse the game to pre NGE and restart the servers. They would have had a decent playerbase again.
SOE has a bunch of idiots for execs. |

The overall problem with SWG...it listened to what the vocal 'gamers' cried for in MMOs, a sandbox that allowed you to do pretty much anything you could think of (within reason).
However, like typical gamers, most found the path of least resistance in that game, the vast majority took to being cookie-cutter roles like TK/BHs and stuck to complaining about the lack of other classes in mass numbers.
Then that moved on to "Well this is Star Wars, I want to be a Jedi!" This forced SoE to shoehorn the original implementation of Force Sensitivity into the game. Players complained that it was too random and too hard. SoE broke down and made becoming a Jedi that much easier.
Now, here we are, during the heyday of the Galactic Civil War (basically between Empire and Return overall) and you've got thousands of Jedi running around. This made people whine and complain that everyone was a Jedi.
So SoE broke down and started on the NGE-style of Professions...pretty much pissing off EVERYONE in the process. And this doesn't even touch on the issue of how player housing was handled in the world.
Having spent the bulk of my time being a CH/BE it really pissed me off when I lost BOTH of my roles...the only thing that kept me around for a while after everything went down was the space combat, and that was obviously shoehorned in and wasn't going to be expanded upon. |

I'm sad.
I went to SWG from UO and had a blast for two years and then NGE/SOE had to ruined everything due to ignorance. Many fans rage quit. Also Wow doomed SWG. Pre-NGE was bugging but still can play and have a good times, later on it got worst. The game was bugged and they decided to go ahead release the expansion which turned swg upside down. So Pissed cause i wasted my money for the asshole who doesn't give a shit about us(aka fans)! SWG would have be an awesome mmo if it were treated differently. Every time I see SOE , I will never touch their game. I rather shit in their dvd box and deliver back to the company. |

The crafting in SWG was amazing for the time and even now would still be more detailed than any MMOG I've seen. When SWG came out its graphics were amazing. The large zones were also impressive, although I'm not sure if they were really larger than other MMOGs or if they just seemed that way because they were almost entirely empty..
..which was the problem I had with SWG, almost no actual content. There were random missions you could run, and they added a few 'theme parks' a few months in, but it wasn't enough for me, and I'm guessing for most people.
And yeah, ultimately, who wants to be a moisture farmer, we want to be Luke Skywalker and/or Darth Vader. Thus cometh SW:TOR. |
